Galas don't just happen. Even after the long involved back room work there is much to do on the ground. At Grosmont shed on the day before the start of the gala there was a lot to do. I've pinched this from a posting on Facebook but it gives an insight into what was needed by shed staff and volunteers to get ready for today (Friday). Both D7628 & 45212 started the day as failures and had to be repaired along the way, including a trip to Scotland to pick up a replacement valve for D7628.

    Shed gala prep day.

76079 first off and fitness to run examined off 5 pit.
B1 and 80136 lit for traffic.
    Coal stage filled.
7714 and 1501 both shunted off the fab shop ramp and onto the coal pit for brake adjustment, disposal and coaling.
Both panniers back on the ramp and B1 on the pit for fitness to run exam.
B1 shunted back onto 5199, then 5199 set onto the pit for brake adjustment and coaling.
08556 onto wheel drop for vacuum brake fault and repair.
    Repton back on shed.
Pit cleared and Repton on top of 8 Lucie. B1 then set for coaling, brake adjustment and then off shed.
    Coal stage filled.
76079 back on shed for coaling for next day traffic.
Two loads of wood brought from stack for weekends usage.
Fiat van back with new brake valve for D7628.
5199 shunted into back of 5.
Repton and Lucie onto number one road pit. Drop Lucie off and Repton back outside 4 for repairs.
80136 up the head shunt and 76079 off shed.
    Repton inside 4.
    Coal stage filled.
    D.M.U. off shed after fueling.
    44806 outside 4 after disposal.
    D7628 repaired.
45212 inside 5 after disposal and electric fault finding.
Lucie springs adjusted, cleaned and boiler washed out.
B1 dropped off the coal pit after disposal.

    Notes.
Shed full tidy up, ash spread down the lane, overhanging trees cut back in back field and all pallets moved.

I had a great day at the Gala today, everything seemed to be working well, the large prairie had a sprightly run up from Pickering this afternoon with the teak coaches.

Very enjoyable day today, had a lovely run behind 5199 in the evening (booked to be double headed with 7714 which has been withdrawn for the rest of the gala now - posts on Facebook suggest brake issue which needs looking at out of steam)

My video from Friday and Saturday featuring all nine steam locos in action. Another fine gala by the NYMR.

That view will probably look completely different by this time next year. The conifers in the background are due to be felled.

I wonder how they are going to get them out? As I believe when they were planted they thought they would have the trackbed as an access road.

An access track has already been cut into the woods about 50m East of Levisham crossing.
Also I think there may be plans to use the crossing opposite Platelayers cottages as this has just been renewed.
The turning in over the bridge may restrict that use though due to weight and width for turning in.

What I can't figure out is how they're going to get big timber lorries from Levisham to Lockton or from the station to Stape as presumably neither road is capable of handling articulated HGVs.

They will use the normal timber extraction lanes through the forest to the North West of Levisham.
The access track has been recently resurfaced in gravel.

Another cracking Gala from the NYMR, obviously a lot of thought and planning went into it and the GWR engines all seemed to fit quite nicely into the landscape. The star for me though was the return of Repton. After copping 7714 and 80136 I got the chance to ride behind Repton up from Levisham to Goathland on the Sunday morning.

A few comments have been made up-thread about people not doing shots south of Goathland summit. Well, I don't recall seeing anyone filming this run (with request stop at Newton Dale) and that is a shame because, even running tender first, she and her crew produced the most exhilarating journey I've had all year. I went and thanked the driver and fireman - and I wasn't the only one to be impressed by the run. Shame it probably isn't on film.

Anyway, a thoroughly enjoyable Gala, and a refreshing and nutritious Beer Fest as well.... hic
