Just waiting for the outraged missive from the originator of this thread...... Belgium is even further away than Southern Railway territory!

Fraid I might have to disappoint.

I'm curious as to how this engine will be working on the line and from what I have read it looks like a little niche is there for it. If that's the case then fine, and it will be interesting to see how it works and performs. For a novelty it certainly is different and certainly has character - I like the idea of it becoming a pet on the line and given some nice TLC alongside the larger engines that take up the role of the regular passenger workings.

Of course, it is foreign but as preservation has changed and evolved and engines found homes on areas they never used to run, it sees other engines turn up in new places. I think a Black 5 while previously foreign, has now become an adopted North East engine after the class has often been a bedrock to keeping the NYMR running. While I like engines such as Black 5s, Q6, B1 and the BR standards that are on the line, this engines place amongst these certainly throws up some character and novelty that I think adds an interesting and nice balance and brings benefits that outweigh the thinking of it not having regional links.

I have no doubt that others will welcome the S15 to join the likes of Repton returning to steam, even if these are designs I don't rate or like personally as I think theres others out there (even from other regions) that I think are (justifiably) better in comparison and why I take the stance of not liking these to be there. Yet, I have to admit, I'm interested to see WC 34101 Hartland to return as its an engine that defies that usual stance, but, this is just my usual preference and rather academic. Most people will be happy to have a ride on the line regardless of the engine.

There are not many engines that are small, adaptable and capable to do this role, but I'm sure that 'Lucie' will gain affection and interest on the line. Probably including mine...

It will not be the first "Foreign " vehicle to work on the NYMR.
We already have something Dutch that is in use numerous times a year.
Thurs 7th was its last operating date.

Speaking of exotic traction - couple of donkeys at Grosmont at present - seem to be to do with some filming taking place at the station.

As I remarked on the NYMR forum. Lucie is to be converted into a S.H.E.L., i.e. a Steam Heating Ex Locomotive:eek::Arghh:. Shades of those converted Class 25 diesels back in the eighties, remember the E.T.HE.L.s Electric Train Heating Ex Locomotives. Seriously from what I gather Lucie is to be the C & W "pet" High days and Holidays shunter and winter/Santa steam heater for stock based at Pickering. Along with use as test unit for newly overhauled stock heating systems.

Given that its owner is the Traction & Rolling Stock Manager, I think he'll want to play with it once he's got it working, and it definitely will not be an ex-locomotive! More of a Grosmont pet that gets loaned to Pickering from time to time! As far as steam heating stock goes, the latest thinking is to be to send the train engine down earlier to do the job, at a stroke saving the hiring of a portable boiler at a cost of 20K or whatever it was - Lucie has been made redundant for this job before it has even steamed! Even the carriage testing role looks dubious, as plans for the new carriage shed include provision for a stationary boiler for testing and preheating. A few years away yet though, there's a small matter of £2.5M matched funding to raise first.

I understand that this year one of the Ecclesbourne Valley Barclays is being hired in to heat the Pickering Santas.

We've all read this, but I was talking to the NYMR GM the other day and he told me it was news to him! As far as he's aware the plan this year is, as I said in my previous post, to send the train engine down early to heat the stock. Maybe someone else has made the arrangement though and not told him yet!

Am I right in saying a sentinel came to NYMR in the 80s (maybe from Middleton) and managed to get up the bank with a mk1? I'm sure I remember reading about it in an old Beano...

It was the Middleton's Sentinel and I think it got to almost within sight of Goathland Station with a single Mk 1 before coming to a halt. Would have been better at the Pickering end of the line where in BR days (according to Ken Hoole) the Sentinel shunter based at Pickering was vacuum fitted as an emergency standby to haul trains to Scarborough, if needed. That's no longer possible but I'm sure that Lucie would be able to manage a couple of Mk 1s to Levisham (or the equivalent in brake vans).

I thought it made it to Goathland, With a single Chocolate and cream MK1 in tow? How did it get back though? I remember it featuring on a WH Smith video as a kid 'LNER steam' think it's on youtube somewhere.

I concur I also thought it made it. Along with the video you mentioned, Railway Magazine launched a monthly video magazine and as a taster released the first as a free sampler of their new product, the Sentinels trip to Goathland also featured on it.

Steve is your man for the definitive answer, as he has a foot in both NYMR and Middleton camps - quite possibly he was on the loco at the time.

Here is a link to the video I think the Sentinal makes an appearance towards the end, certainly worth a watch anyhow

The Sentinel has visited the NYMR twice. On its first visit it double headed a three coach train to Goathland with the J27 but came back on its own with the three coaches. I wasn't around during its second visit on the day when it worked that one-coach train.
The loco is presently in the final stages of its current overhaul and will hopefully steam again before the year end.
