    Gorgeous set of photos. Query.... did 9466's numberplate have a red background in BR service, or is that a preservation era embellishment?

    GWR / Western Region numberplates were usually black, but there may have been exceptions. Can't say I dislike them in red!

    I was sure I'd heard George melly had died but seemingly hes alive and well crewing 9466 in Norfolk....!

    IIRC red backed name and numberplates were originally part of the 1949 B.R. lined black livery for mixed traffic locos but later spread to some unlined black locos. Off hand I can't remember the date the practice was discontinued but possibly early 50's. Some of the early panniers (2021 class?) overhauled at Crewe also had red plates but I think that was more of nod to the LNWR.
