I just scanned this photo from a book - 100 Years of Steam Trains. Anyone know when and where it was taken?

Don't know where, but the "When" would be before it was transferred to the museum of British Transport in Clapham High Street. The "WD" in the background gives that away.

So ... was Hardwicke stored at Crewe Works before transfer to Clapham? Was it spruced up in the paint shop before transfer? Anyone know for sure?

I've just been looking through a couple of books - Crewe Works and its Men by B. Reed, and A pictorial History of LNWR Locomotives by E. Talbot.

The interesting thing for me is that I've always read that 790 was a Precedent... But in E. Talbot's book it's given as a Large Jumbo.
Was 790 built new as a Large Jumbo, or was it a renewal of the Precedent of the same name?

The LNWR lineage is fascinating, as the Large Jumbos origins can be traced right back to the Ramsbottom Newtons of the early 1860s with very few significant changes being made in between.

    Richard.

I remember being on a main-line trip in the '80s, not sure exactly when, double headed by Hardwicke and Evening Star. An unlikely combination, most unlikely to be seen again, but they sat together very well!
    Does anybody have any photos?

So earlier than I thought. I do recall the trip took us over the Carnforth - Leeds route. I went on a lot of steam-hauled excursions in that era in the North West, I wish I'd kept a record of them.

Hardwicke also did a series of shuttles between Carnforth and Grange-over-Sands around the same time. I must get round to scanning the slides some day!

I believe so, I was asking a pal who was on the double-headed trip with me, and he reminded me of that.

I was on that trip, the LCGB "Fells and Dales" tour. It was supposed to be the Midland Compound and Hardwicke, but 1000 failed and 92220 stood in. Little and Large!
