The news on the 8f boiler seems to have gone rather quiet- it did seem to me to be a rather strange approach to sell a restorable boiler and keep the remains of the bottom half?

Just out of interest did she have her original Doncaster built boiler?

hardly fair then to be blaming the GWS, it seems to me some of the Barry10 were unwanted and agreement was reached that parts from them would be distributed to other groups. One Hall a 51o1 and a 28xx went this way (and 5224 to follow). The 8F was another in this category.

It seems rather than being unwanted the GWS actually provided the impetus to break them up. As far as I know, nobody was asked if they wanted 48518 complete from the bus depot storage. Its inconceivable a home for it intact would not have been forthcoming. Breaking the 51xx is another scandal, again a proper future could have been found, the scarcity of suitable heritage line motive power. I admire the engineering project and the skills of the 6880 group but has the world really been so bereft of a smaller wheeled Hall that it was worth chopping a 51xx?

So again perhaps your ire would be better directed at those who agreed to give the locomotive to the GWS when they asked (its like blaming Dai Woodham for scrapping all the locomotives that BR sold to him) and also consider the fact that either A no one asked before them and why was that when the provenance of the locomotive was well known, or B no one offered to take the locomotive on even after the GWS expressed an interest (it was hardly a secret what the plans were), or in fact C. why no one had bought the loco from Barry in the c.30 years she was there and why was that when the provenance of the locomotive was well known?

As for whether it is inconceivable or not we will never now unless those involved at Barry chooses to comment, however if anyone was so desperate for it its also possibly more inconceivable that no one tried to save her before it ever got to this position. Sadly 48518 has become the village post office of railway preservation, no one seems to have cared about her when they had the chance but now many up in arms about it now she has gone.

I cannot comment regarding the 51XX bar noting that 8 survived (I don't recall this much fuss when the WSR broke one to create a class of locomotive that never actually existed which seems strange if historical matters are the key driver of the concerns being raised) and thus to suggest that saving an additional 1 is more important that creating a grange is something that you should take up with the grange group as I know members post on here and thus unlike the GWS they may be available for you to air your concerns, likewise with the Patriot Group who took many bits of the 8F or Mr Riley who has bought the boiler off the Barry 10 black 5.

That's fine, possibly to save some time look up the definition of debate and understated that it means discussing differing positions rather than just expecting everyone to agree with your view of circumstances.

there are several 5101 class in Barry condition still (why I don't know!). Noone wanted 4121, but it contained lots of reusable bits. My point was about the 8F though really, and 4707 has underlined it, it wasn't only the GWS who wanted bits of it and it will assist the Patriot group and others which is a good thing. The point I made earlier is that it is only really the number , the id, that has been lost. As a result of reusing parts from various Barry locos, we'll be gaining a Saint, A County, A Patriotand a Grange and maybe others to follow.

Plus no one has answered yet whether the boiler was a Doncaster product anyway as if not the blame for the demise of the important bits cannot be lain at the door of the GWS, as post boiler removal she could have been resurrected with the boiler from the 5 or the 8 from abroad?

There was clearly some strange goings on with the last Barry locos. Not one of them was advertised for sale. If I remember correctly, Mr Riley made an enquiry for a complete (sic) 44901 and was knocked back. Why?
The farcical County/48518 boiler situation was fully played out on Nat Pres years ago. Quite frankly, this was the most stupid decision in railway preservation. The locos became the Didcot pick and mix. It is a sorry saga and some of the chickens are coming home to roost.

Unfortunately, one cannot pluck the engine record card out of the sky.

I assume that LMS record cards are available like GWR ones are? I would hope that some due diligence would have been done when the boiler rebuild was taken on, if nothing else for the paper trail which will invariably be needed if the County is to go mainline, plus if you are converting the boiler you are going to want to know if its say a 1945 version or much newer?

Priceless, truly priceless. You know better than that I expect anyone to agree with me nor is it important. I am not arguing for a particular course of action or demanding anyone be held to account, simply expressing a personal view over the fate of now scrapped locos.

Which is exactly why 48518's inner firebox should not have been used as part of a brand new boiler. Much easier and straight forward to make everything new.

I have the ERCs for all the 8Fs. Unfortunately, and rather surprising to me, it doesn't list the boilers fitted. It records the loco as New - LNER 24/08/44 and W.F.S. (withdrawn from service?) 24/07/65. Boilers were generally changed at five year intervals, sometimes a bit shorter, but also sometimes extended to a maximum of seven years. It appears to have been a Willesden engine from 03/02/51 throughout, and all overhauls were carried out at Crewe.

I know the same Peter, 44901 was subject of a number of serious enquiries and then finally seemed to have found salvation only to be divested of its boiler. Neither part seems to have made much progress and hopefully will be reunited one day.
48518 was certainly enquired after during its preservation time too so I am confident a better outcome would have been feasible had it been remotely sought.

Around 2006 I was looking for an ex Barry loco and made enquiries to the relevant parties both directly and through influential parties with local connections over a long period re 44901 and 48518 and hit a proverbial brick wall every time. Since then the world has moved on and so have I..

It's a right can of tinworms this one!
The Doncaster 8F frames are definitely gone. Whatever your views, its gone. Now what about that Crab or that other 4MT 2-6-0? Maybe someone will take on at least one of them...
