Why would it matter where said 8F was built? It'd have ended up in BR Black like the rest - only difference being the worksplate! Until the trend turns away from "everything BR" it quite frankly doesn't matter where or when it was built. Or, at least, that's what the general public (The majority customer) will think!

If I win euromillions, I'm getting an 8F, it'll go into apple green just to wind people up! ( Maybe black with NE on the tender sometimes too) ;).

Equally the "general public" has little interest in a Saint, County, Grange or Patriot perhaps?

It's way beyond my pay grade but it appears that a number of organisations and contractors disagree and have been prepared to put their PII on the line to deliver the project, not seen it noted what the financial differences were between conversation and new build, but assume the former came down as the cheapest option?

There is s gone chap on this forum who happily conjures wonderful model railway engines on the cut them up and mix things up before reassembly principle . In the case of the county I can't help but feel that a similar approach was adopted .

Has anything been said about the boiler since LNWR ceased doing contract work?

Would LNER black with 'NE' on the tender actually be a legitimate livery for an 8F? I'm somewhat reminded of the Hornby-Dublo (later Wrenn) N2s that came in all Big Four liveries!

Appears to have had some cosmetic attention and with tender. I wonder why it ended up with the "dregs" mentioned above?

48518 can't really be counted as Preserved at any stage surely. Wasn't it just in Barry10 limboland?

I don't know about the LNER ones, but my understanding is that the Swindon built 8fs were turned out in LMS livery.

I find it hard to describe any Barry wreck as preserved. 'Not scrapped' might be a better description.

Better not engage in a debate on 44901s boiler or 48518 frames because you will be straight back on your high horse of grudges, bias and axe-grinding. Oddly enough the very same you seem to excel at.

I seem to remeber that 48518 was the subject of an appeal and fund raising by Peak Rail but it never reached fruition. Do I remember right that there was a limited edition fine art print with proceeds going to the fund?
That it ended up with the dregs from Barry surprised me.
Up until the early 80's I think that nobody thought that all locos could be saved so spares gathering was normal. In the very early days you would complete your loco by adding spares even with Dai's blessing. Later on your pass was endorsed with ' no souvenirs or spares'. I never kept the letter from my first official visit but later visited like most others by walking through the un fenced perimeter.

You mean like other LNER and GWR locos had their numbers on the buffer beam?
