It's always possible that I am wrong and naive. But I do believe that the new Chair of the WSRplc is someone who makes things happen and deals with issues before they become serious problems.

The root of internicine is from the Latin internecinus, or fight to the death. Chambers Dictionary defines squabble as "A noisy, petty quarrel" so it cannot be both. The implied omparison with the WSRA upheaval is also very wide of the mark. That is not to say that there are not legitimate concerns. However, it would be very helpful if the WSR PLC would issue a statement about Ken Davidge's departure from the board.

I would have thought the two words sadly only too compatible in a number of instances. That the WSRA did not get to the point of actual homicide is obviously true. Not far off suicide though.

However, the really sad thing about the present, relatively mild, spat, is that it resembles an aftershock behind an earthquake. Do have a care everyone.

Yet another contradiction. You really need to check the meaning of the words.

Rather quarrelsome semantics do nothing for this matter.

Perhaps if the pots and kettles could agree on their blackness, it might be helpful.

Perhaps you should do one of your then & now, with this as the "then" shot

I've always found threatening to confiscate equipment works wonders, even if its just the memory card - done it several times - they tend not to pont the camera for fear of loosing their precious shots from elsewhere! :)

Deliberately standing in front of them clad in orange so as to bugger up their 'master shot' is another good one. ;)

The best thing would be to go to the stakeholder meeting as detailed on the WSR website. Then we should get some facts.

This is all very well in theory if you are Arnold Schwarzenegger. But if you are on your own, are definitely not AS, and both the trespassers bigger than you, it is likely that you will be the one in receipt of a punch.

West Somerset Railway - Then and Now #97

    Bishops Lydeard 1972 / 2017

I have put this pair up really as an excuse to talk about that rather wonderful single slip that used to be here, and was taken out early in the present company's tenure.

Having it here avoided having a facing point in either the up or the down line at this location. Avoiding facing points seemed to be a hang over from the pre1870's when signalling was in its infancy and protection of facing points was poor.

I wonder why it had to be removed?

Looks like it had been partly dismantled in the 1972 shot? Maybe it had been damaged beyond repair?

Extension of the platform? I'd interpret it as needing a stop signal for arriving "up" trains that has to be before the crossover road. (The post, without an arm, is visible in the first shot). So presumably when the platform was extended to allow for longer trains, the "up" starter was also moved forward, but that could only happen by removal of the crossover; hence the slip connection to the goods shed becomes a simple point off the down line. To have left the slip in place mid way along the extended platform would have required an additional signal in this direction and changes to the interlocking, so a lot of extra complexity for no operational benefit.

I agree that it is a shame it is gone. The flowing pointwork of the traditional railway was a very characteristic feature that is disappearing from heritage railways.

Also of course a point adjacent to a platform face raises all manner of gauging issues - there had been a gradual removal of these from the post WW2 period to date

The crossover was removed in the 1970's. The platform extension came 20 plus years later.

What do you see that says it was partially dismantled?

As set out above, the removal of the point and the platform extension are unrelated.

Maybe it was forward planning knowing a platform extension was coming? :)

When did the up starter move - in the preservation era, was it ever re-instated on the post visible in the first picture? The crossover would have to be abolished before the signal moved, even if the platform extension didn't happen until later.

    Thanks.

The box was closed and the station 'unsignalled' before the line closed, and the lever frame removed from the box (I wonder where it went / is now?). The layout was clipped up for running through the up platform, so a number of disconnections must have occurred then.
