Excellent news - good to see the high quality work being produced by Cranmore being rewarded with more orders. Any chance that they could accidentally 'lose' the nameplates?!

Utterly agree save that "Braveheart" should lose her name first. Listeners to "I'm sorry I haven't a clue" will know why.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but, has 5239 been withdrawn from service yet or is it imminent ?

I believe she was withdrawn from service sometime in 2015.

It's to do with Hamish & Dougal plus Scottish hillsides and flatulence.

I guess it shows just how much is no longer available in facilities materials, machinery, labour and all the rest of it that in Swindon Steam Cooks states a general repair was scheduled for 17 days. Of course that was with boiler and many other parts ready refusbished sitting ob the shelf, and every other time saving technique they could think of but...

Actually this is good by preservation era standards. Cranmore have also been good at sticking to schedules.

If you looked at the number of man-hours that went into the components already on the shelf, and the number put in over the 17 days the locomotive was in the shops, then applied that number of man hours to the Cranmore team over 2 years, it probably isn't much different. I'll wager some of them are volunteers too so there will be odd times where no work is going on with the locomotive, unlike in a main workshop of yesteryear. They clearly have a good idea of production planning at Cranmore to have turned out locomotives on a consistent timescale, even allowing for contingencies which will always arise with vintage machinery.

All of those involved in the overhaul of locomotives at Cranmore are volunteers. We generally work Wednesdays (Old Codgers Day!) and the weekend. About the only work we do not do in-house is boiler welding, steel and copper, where a coded welder is required and manufacture, prep and fitting of flue tubes.

No doubt. Its an observation, not a criticism.
Its fortunate we have so many locomotives though, otherwise things would be rather difficult.

I find it amazing that ESR volunteers are so willing to put their time and effort into overhauling locos, which then leave the railway as soon as they are finished.

I suppose the reward is that it generates quite a bit of money for other projects on the railway.
