For an amusing story [well, I thought it was amusing :-] about how utterly unreliable human memory can be, check out this page (warning: slightly long). Let me hasten to add that I myself am not immune to this failing: I once ripped apart the whole fuel system on my Lotus 7 looking for the tip off a transmission filler funnel (long story) which I vividly remembered losing down the fuel filler. I found it a couple of months later - in the side pocket of my travelling tool bag!

I have come to the conclusion that photo evidence is the most reliable in these fields; not only does is not change over time, but there is no human error possible at the time it is taken down (as with written records). So a photo of the 'Atlantic' boilers is definitely the Holy Grail to provide a reliable answer here.

Oh Noel - how much I relate to that! My father and I own a Lotus Turbo Esprit S3 - one of Team Lotus' F1 company cars from the nineteen eighties. We've owned the car since around 1994 and I am always amused to see things written on Facebook and elsewhere swearing blind our car is an S2, or an S1 with an S3 bodykit, people recalling the paint job and interior differently...! The Lotus Forum thankfully gave a platform to give some better info.

Another beautiful loco that I will make a trip down to the Bluebell to see in steam. All this Southern stuff is distracting me from the LMS!!!

Given the tenuous GNR connection, I too will have to make a first trip to the Bluebell to see that :)

    It's the L.N.E.R. bit that's kosher.

What on earth is your problem with the Atlantic Paul? How can the rest of the loco "not be kosher?" If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, walks like a duck, it's a duck! Substitute that for loco

The effort and hard work that has gone into making this a beautiful recreation of a much missed class and all you can do is make trite comments. Just what did the Brighton project do to you? Run over your cat? Scrap an IoW loco to make the frames?

Stop me when I hit upon why you must make these nonsensical and petty asides.

Probably getting close to 'big chufferitis' for his taste.

Seriously, I'd love to see an Atlantic in steam and given that neither 990 or 251 are likely to do that...

Totally agree with SAC. There are many precedents for boilers being swapped and re-used on the railway. The Southern rebuilt some LSWR 0-6-0s with ex LCDR boilers, the LMS did the same to some Highland locos with Caledonian ones, the GWR fitted Swindon taper boilers to some of the ex South Wales locos...

A number of SECR locos ran with boilers purchased from the GNR if it comes to that - not least the class G 4-4-0s that had been bought from the GNoSR...

Manners please! Here are a few reasons:-

The static axleload is c21 tons to which must be added hammer blow. Wear and tear on track and structures which something lighter footed would reduce.

This machine was designed to haul the "Southern Belle" at speeds of up to 80 m.p.h. whereas it will have to accelerate moderately long trains briskly up to no more than 25mph. It will not be mainline certified (ironically unlike the N.E.R. G5) so no excursions onto Network Rail.

If Bradley is to be believed, the G.N.R. and L.B.S.C.R. boilers differed anyway

This could have been an opportunity to produce a suitably sized machine for tourist railway use. For example, the boiler of the H class was used to rebuild several different S.E.R. and L.C.D.R. classes. I gather a spare example exists.

Indeed it smacks very much of "big chufferitis" for the use it is intended for.

With the proviso that it would have to be built into something mainline certificated to make it sufficiently versatile, building this boiler into a replica large Atlantic would seem much more to the point. Too late now.

It is a nice machine which will be of great interest to both the general visitor and the enthusiast community. The people involved are doing a fantastic job and I applaud them

Oh do give it a rest Paul.

Your holier then thou attitude and supposed “right way of doing things” when your own line that you champion has had to bring in mainline locos that never actually ran on the island is absolutely laughable.

The arguments for the Atlantic have been made and one is nearing completion. More power to the collective elbows of those building it.

Quite! So why continue to make a point? You’re not funding it. It doesn’t affect you personally.

Shuttus uppus or puttus uppus your chufferitis!

Better get rid of the Ivatts from your beloved IoWSR then. Far too big for the Island and definitely much bigger than anything that ever ran there. Oh sorry, I forgot that the IoWSR can do no wrong.
But then again, you get exactly the reaction you want. Namely people going off on one about your facile comments.

Sorry I do not quite understand, what has being on an Island got to do with anything? I think that bringing in mainline locos would apply to the vast majority of Preserved Railways.

As I said to you before, manners please! I hope the world of the enthusiast has not degenerated to the point that the "authorised version" is the only one tolerated. If so, there will be a lot more bad decisions in future.
