A few years ago RFA Argus was in dock at South Shields awaiting delivery of a new crane. The haulage company misunderstood the instruction to deliver to "Argus, South Shields" and tried to offload the crane at the South Shields Argos.

When I worked on the big railway, dealing with confused customers at Lymington (Leamington) or Moreton (Moreton on Marsh) and even Wearmouth which was never a station but a bridge somewhere up'north

A number of times non local staff booked to work at Weaverthorpe LC between Malton and Scarborough have found themselves looking around a small Yorkshire Wolds village often at 2 in the morning trying to find the railway.
Actually about 8 miles away at Sherburn which itself often gets visited by staff booked for Sherburn in Elmet near Leeds.

Reminds me of a story I read about a Turkish lorry driver who had a load to deliver from Turkey to Gibraltar - only to have a local copper explain to him that he'd set his SatNav wrong, and that Gibraltar Point was on the River Humber - as distinct from Gibraltar, off the south coast of Spain . . .

    MTA

Oops - my bad!! It's been pointed out to me by Reading General that Gibraltar is not "off the coast of Spain", but is actually firmly glued onto Spain's southern coast!
    Mea culpa, mea culpa . . .

The Green, Ravenglass & Eskdale was originally known as King of Prussia after a nearby pub, and later Eskdale Green, it changed to The Green in the 1960s to avoid confusion with Eskdale (Dalegarth) which has also now changed to Dalegarth (Eskdale).

The original WSR dropped Heathfield it has been pointed out due to possible confusion. Interestingly there is a movement to re-open the Heathfield branch, from Newton Abbot, in Devon.

Gonna have a go at the Germans, Dutch, Swedish and another of outer countries for calling it a Meter as well. :)

  10. You've missed out the period when it was called Maddieson's Camp (spelling may be poor, I was only little at the time)
Imagine the confusion back in the day with Tunbridge and Tunbridge Wells. Hence the settlement of Tunbridge was renamed Tonbridge. At least they are only a few miles apart!

Gibraltar is actually on the south coast of Spain, that's why they want it back

Sorry - you're quite right as to it being on the south coast of Spain. Unfortunately for the Spanish, the British government is abiding by the UN principle of the right of peoples to self determination - and the Gibraltarians voted by a massive majority in a recent referendum that they want Gibraltar to remain as British territory. So the Spanish can go whistle. I believe I'm right in saying that the Americans aren't even willing to discuss the small matter of giving us back America, either.

Oh, and in accordance with the same UN principle, the French can't have the Channel Islands, and Argentina can't have the Falkland Islands. "Into each life, a little rain must fall", eh?

That could cause a bit of fun and games for people using SatNavs, eh? :)

And I wonder how many football fans, wanting to watch their club playing away to Chelsea, ended up in the Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire?

The also voted by a massive majority that they want to remain in the EU. As things are going at present they'll have to choose one or the other.

I remain to be convinced we're lucky Talyllyn Jnc has come been and gone..... :(

Another RH&D station comes to mind. The wayside stop at St.Mary's Bay (where I saw my very first RH&D loco ... No.5 "Hercules", then way taller than six year old me!) was renamed Jefferstone Lane for a while. Although geographically logical - as it's a fair old yomp to the seafront - somehow it lacked the charm of it's once and present title.
