I certainly don't "like" them on tourist railways. (A) out of place on most such lines, (B) Apart from being expensive to run themselves there is the effect on civil engineering structures.
Out on the main line, then the bigger the better, again for economic reasons. "Clan Line" for example (there are others) has been a consistently fine performer.
Just take a look at various Youtube postings of 41312 at Swanage and the utter competence she displays hauling 5 Mk.1s. I think I am being a bit big chufferite myself in saying "nothing bigger than 4MT needed on most tourist lines!

I've found just ignoring is the best route! I think we've got the message now.

In the meantime, roll on the day when Beachy Head is complete! I certainly can't wait.

No, because PH, the self-appointed Unofficial Secretary of State for Heritage Railways has decided that certain policies will be followed and others discarded. So, we'll just have to choose to keep calm, carry on and do a Catalonia! Some of the USofS's policies do receive "likes" from me however (which doesn't necessarily make either my views or his "correct.") I look forward with tremendous pleasure to seeing this Atlantic running. I, for one, have never seen a loco of this wheel arrangement running and it will be a tremendous pull for the Bluebell.

To which one though? The one about Railways not extending or not needing buffet cars? Going back to Beachy Head, really looking forward to see it in action, more power to those good folks at the Bluebell who in the words of JFK 'choose to do these things not because they are easy but because they are difficult'

Much like J94s on the IoW really. Rather than sit behind a keyboard, why don't you pop off down to Sheffield Park and tell the Atlantic guys that they've got it all wrong? I'm sure they'd be delighted to learn the error of their ways.

I fail to understand how a replica LBSCR Atlantic on an ex-LBSCR line (which the originals occasionally ran on) is "out of place".

Certainly more at home there than either an Austerity or an Ivatt on the IoWSR. But preservation is full of anachronisms and it would be a sad day if lines didn't operate locos that were "out of place" as we'd be denied the sight and sound of many gems at work.

41312 running at Swanage Railway doesn’t use any less coal and water than 31806, 34070 & 80104 doing the same job.

I personally think feel this thread has reached the point whereby logical, rational, and fair observations have been made by a number of people.

One steadfastly refuses to admit other views are available. That is his right of course. But his views cannot be seen, as a consequence, as being anything other than a petty and thinly veiled attack on the hard working people of the Atlantic Project and Bluebell Railway.

That to me is a crying shame and I hope in the years to come when 32424 is in steam and working, that he may think about the manner he has spoken repeatedly on this project while the rest of us enjoy the fruits of the labours of some very talented, very determined and inspirational people.

Please let me know when you do visit us. I’m only a recent volunteer and employee but I’d be happy to find the time to show you around. The Bluebell Railway has an atmosphere and character all its own.

Even I'm surprised by this - not so much the standard 4 tank and mogul but 34070!? That's very pleasing if true.

Is the obesity epidemic spreading to steam locos now? If they're feeding that 2MT the same as a West Country, it'll be a 3MT by the end of the year. :Woot:

Yep, the driver and fireman combination can have more of an effect on economy that what the loco is. The worst thing for 34070’s economy is when the afternoon fireman fills the boiler up so much at disposal; that so much water needs to be blown down in the morning to get water in sight that the loco could have done a round trip hauling a train!

So you flatly refused to believe the opinion of someone presumably involved, possible even a footplate man with experience of these things, jut because it disagrees with your views?
