44027 can be added too. On WD's, I don't understand on how Woodhams obtained some of the locos, as 45337 which went to Barry was withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor.

Perhaps he thought there was more potential profit in choosing locos with copper fireboxes so didn't tender or put in lower offers for the WDs?

The WD 2-8-0s had copper fireboxes.

    I stand corrected.

Wikipedia which I initially looked at says steel but without any citation as does the book "Steaming for Victory" Perhaps confusing them with the 2-10-0s?

LNER Index specifically refers to problems with the copper fireboxes so that seems quite definitive.

I happen to have the Railway Gazette article of 1943 to hand but Part 6B of the Locomotives of the LNER is also a useful source.

The location of yards that bought engines for scrap bears no logical linkage to the sheds supplying said locos. 2968, 6447 and 7298 were all withdrawn from Wigan Springs Branch, and made the long journey to Barry and eventual preservation. Three miles along the branch was Central Wagon at Ince, busily cutting up ex-LNER and ex-GWR locos.

But aren't you glad he did? By the mid sixties the options were somewhat limited.

Na, I'd rather he'd tendered on a few northern ones with copper boxes!

I know I should really think twice about answering that question, but it is nearly bonfire night, so I might as well light the blue touch paper. ;-)

If it were me, for a proposed fantasy new-build, I would go and attempt at bringing Hawksworth's proposed Cathedral 4-6-2 to life:[IMG]

Hawksworth denied it ever had anything to do with him.

You (and I) might think it odd that the drawing office could sketch out an outline proposal without the work being authorised by the CME, but Stanier and Hawkesworth had done exactly the same thing about 20 years previously with a proposal for a compound Castle.

True. There were four J94s allocated to the Cromford & High Peak line. One of them, 68012, was cut up at Cashmore's at Newport, but not the other three. I believe some "Kings" were cut up at Kettering and Norwich. That was a trek for them to get there.

Without checking, not sure if there has been any reference to this one. The Yanks are noted for doing things big-style so how about a Pennsylvania T1 4-4-4-4? They've got the last surviving PRR 'Long-Haul' tender for which with its 8-wheel bogies must be nearly as long as any of our locos with tender. Various parts being made for the loco itself.

There's a few of us watching events over the pond. Along with the Pennsy T1, threaded as Pennsylvania RR Duplex 4-4-4-4, check out thread UP4014 both tucked away in the International section. The T1 website keeps pretty current and has had a recent makeover.

For the BigBoy, the most frequent updates seem to be online (search YouTube for up.com 4014 .... which don't come up in chronological order, of course!).

BTW they're well worth watching from day 1 (examining the relic on it's isolated length of track, in the middle of what looked like a community market day). The transfer to Cheyenne is one to keep an eye out for, the greasy army on the tender reminded me of the Fremen 'Sandriders' atop the worms in the film version of Dune!

It's some project to watch unfolding and great to see Union Pacific's top brass are as pleased as punch it's happening. They're certainly clocking onto the immense publicity value of the project to their railroad. Catch you over on 4014's own thread. :)

Yes. There was only one GWR pacific. It should stay that way.
