Euromillions win would have that in motion, together with a new Claughton!

What constitutes a modern part anyway? locos were often overhauled and would have had many new parts over the years, Midland stuff, in particular, was always being upgraded and rebuilt, class 2s to class 3s and so on, so a loco dating back to the 1870s/1880s would be fitted with components new in, say, the 1920s or 30s, which would be modern.

It was in the Raiway Press that the NRM would prefer it to remain a working locomotive

Yes, but that's not the same thing as it's definitely going to be overhauled.

Anyway it looks like the Swanage railway have fixed it, so we've got another two years to enjoy it before the boiler ticket expires. Then hopefully it will then get another overhaul.

The only question now is where will it be based. I'm hoping the rumours are true.

The problem with Rumours are that they don't always come true, but i'm hoping its somewhere in the south, if, and its still got to be a big if, it is at Swanage, I'm hoping that 563 does get chance to steam along side 30120 before she goes out of ticket.

It wasn't a rumour it was a quote from the NRM

To clear up any misunderstanding, I'm fairly sure that no decision has been made about what will happen when 30120 needs overhaul. Its a bit premature to be thinking about as we don't know for sure how effective and long lasting the repair it's just had / having will be. Any overhaul for another 10 years is going to need a condition assessment and a decision from NRM on wether the necessary material can be replaced. Then someone with the cash and capacity to do the work and a loan deal that makes it worth while.

I'm sure Swanage would be interested but there are other factors and party's involved.

While this is great news, I see that it's 41312 operating the service train today. No surprise really as I guess the T9 probably needs a little bit more running in before it can be rostered for passenger trains. However, I doubt if the footplate crew will be too upset. If I was due to spend a day on a loco on a wet, miserable, blustery November day and had a choice between the Ivatt and the T9, I know which one I'd go for!

Well, technically a masochist since I’d be wishing the cold wet footplate on myself, not others.

But to be serious, I’ve fired a big range of locos spanning 80-odd years of construction, and TBH, Standards (and their ilk) at just a bit, well, dull. Don’t get me wrong - had I been a fireman in the 1950s doing it as a job, I’d have leapt at the rocking grates, reliable injectors, comfortable cabs and so on. But I’m not: I’m doing it as a hobby, and enjoy the challenge, not to mention the feeling of connection to a byegone era, of being on old locos. On those grounds, I’d choose a primitive old loco over an ergonomic new one any day.

After all, you can always wear an extra jacket if you get cold ...

It seems at least one driver in B.R. days preferred an Ivatt over a standard. No surprise. From various videos published it is quite evident 41312 can make light work of any train that can be accommodated in the platforms at the termini.
