Pray tell what you would rather we do if perchance we're at the railway in the evening because we've gone their to do our volunteer turn rather than purely to take photos, and hence don't have our tripods with us?
Take blurred long exposures? - I think not.
Not bother? - Well that would stop others who may be okay with high iso (it's iso by the way, not osi) shots from seeing them.
Ask the loco crews to re-position them under lights?

Please provide us with your solution. I, for one, would love to not have to raise the iso to take handheld night shots.

The first one was taken at Chawton Woods on 3rd May 1997, which I believe is the first version of the green livery. The second one was taken at Salisbury on the first Daylight Railtour on 15th February 1998, I believe to be the later darker green. 2017-11-11-0001.jpg 2017-11-11-0002.jpg

You can clesrly see the differnce between the two greens, i was told the Early green was a GWR green , i know different regions had their own version of BR express green

When I’ve been at the railway and have volunteered all day. I’ve taken my tripod with me. The photo you took of 76017 under the light would look at lot better if you done a long exposure. Because you have upped the iso the back of the loco/tender merges in the darkness of the photo. If you look at the photo of 73096 done by NightRail you can see the complete loco.

I'm not going to get into a willy waving competition regarding volunteering...
The point I was making was that when I'm there to volunteer, I'm not going to have my tripod with me (if you look through my flickr you'll see long exposure images), so the only real option at night is to increase the iso. To be fair, with the 80D you can push the iso further than I did in the shot you're referring to. Taking the shot like that was a creative choice (I could have pushed the iso 2 stops and gained another stop of light by decreasing the shutter speed).

Did they? I'd be interested to know where you got this information from. As regards the actual shade of B.R. express loco green I've always understood that it was intended to be the same shade as G.W.R. middle chrome green and one of the BR paint suppliers, Williamsons who are still in business, have stated this. I'm afraid I take all this discussion of paint shades with 'a pinch of salt' as all paints 'weather' differently due to heat, oil, sunlight etc. Added to this modern lead free paints will not darken over time in the same way as leaded paint did. The colour of the undercoat makes a massive difference particularly reds which have less covering power. Many people have said that B.R. "maroon" is not the same shade as LMS "crimson lake" because it doesn't have the rich deep red colour. The LMS and Midland before it relied on the red oxide undercoat and 50/50 crimson lake/varnish top coat to achieve this effect so, for instance, if one uses a grey undercoat the final colour will look "purpley". Even the colour of the sky will have a massive effect on how we perceive the actual shade. Sorry but I don't believe that we can reliably differentiate paint shades from photographs.
.... and don't get me started on folks who argue about pre-grouping shades - nobody is still alive who remembers them and memory isn't a good guide anyway. I'll get off me soapbox now.

Not forgetting that the paint was probably mixed by a labourer in a workshop.
    Using a recipe card stating
    3 parts of this.
    2 parts of that.
    1 part the other
And then add a splash of something or other.
The interpretation of all that will lead to considerable variations in the results.

I will suggest to the MHR management that all locos will in future be painted plain, unlined black to avoid problems with different shades

I'd take anything Williamson's say with a pinch of salt as well. As a regular customer of theirs (we paint narrowboats with their Mastercraft and Spec 81 ranges) I tried to order Middle Chrome Green from them a couple of weeks ago and they hadn't got a clue what I was talking about. After allegedly checking every record they ever had they said they'd never made it, ever, for anyone. Then rang back to say they'd found it, then sent Middle Chrome (which is bright yellow) instead! After a further conversation they decided they were unable to supply, and we used BS381C Bronze green as the closest alternative.

Quite possibly true of most pre-grouping shades but the Ken Hoole Trust has an original swatch plate of N.E.R. 'Saxony green' from Darlington works showing the colour and lining to be used on locomotives and this has been kept in darkness for most of its life. I had a batch made up by Williamsons a few years ago and it is now in their catalogue as Saxony green. If you compare the swatch with all the other existing locos painted N.E.R. green, which I did, none of them match.

The Std 4 and Cheltenham were out on The Belle & RAT respectively last night, with Lion assisting.
No shots of those though, as I spent far to long in the yard trying (and generally failing) to get some in focus shots of a stranger, in the least lit part of the yard, for those who aren't able to get down to Ropley in the immediate future.

Beautiful piccies folks and thanks for sharing them.

To me, there's something so atmospheric about monochrome renderings, most especially of locos in steam at a depot in the dark (does that make me sound wierd?). Mind you, the colour ones are superb too! :)

I hear the word tripod is a dirty word around Ropley on a Saturday night.:)

With the latest issue of MHR News is a flyer asking for donations for 35005. Anyone donating can vote on the livery colour of 35005. You have the choice of blue or green livery.
