I personally think it looks better without them, besides without these its more a nod to how it looked when it worked in Spain - along with that wonderful headlight (although this could be fitted better in a slightly lower position IMHO) also as in Spain.

I think the Smoke Deflectors complete the look for the engine as that's how it would've looked in its bygone days

Perhaps you should look at all the photos from Spain at Seville in its short working career no deflectors there, did these 'carbuncles' arrive at the 'rebuild' just before the Ratty bought her?

Although I thought it looked better without, the bottom line has to be the consideration here. If forward vision is impaired, what the hey? They're needed .... end of!

I must admit, I prefer it without the deflectors too...

Pretty little loco (even with those elephant ears). It'll look so good alongside 'Esk' next season! Not that I'm itching to see the next crop of photos from @Nigel Day showing latest progress on the Greenly classic, of course.

Chime whistles seam to be 'in' on the ratty - did Esk's old whistle not survive the fire?

I'm looking forward to what happens to the second loco, which I think was purchased by the Sian group....

DFE0ED47-3434-4E45-B456-DDBD3937783F.jpeg This is the old one. There are people who like single note whistles and there are people who like chimes. Esk has one of each so everyone should be happy.

The second Krauss is owned by two people who also happen to belong to the Sain group.
This loco is but a parshial set of parts. There’s no boiler or tender. It will be very different to Willan Beck, when finished which will be a long time in the future.

Hence the reason why I'm interested to see how it turns out!

I rather like that a loco with distinctive heritage (not built with the RER in mind) has a distinctive look, rather like Black Prince at the RHDR.

I think she looks beautiful, a fab job by all involved.

Pretty 'cream crackered' then - I was just commenting that both Esk & Willan both now have quite large chime whistles when before they didn't - I don't mind them just they are different than before. Do you know the origins of both chime whistles please?

All the working brass work was cream crakered. I suspect the old whistle is a Bassett lowke. The whistle on WB is a south African chime donated to the project. Eak’s Are a copy of a Bulied whistle I had the castings for. The chime is a three note chime of 3” diameter of a similar chime to one I made in Tas. The notes are not a pure cord but very molodic. I give all my whistles
names. The Bulied whistle is named Oliver and the Chime Lucy.

Just looking at the wheel sizes of these locos in proportion to the boilers/ grates/ cylinders... they sure must be strong starting little beggers
