    The project got put on hold some time ago. That's as far as it's got for the time being. I seem to remember the general consensus being that with Lyd being built at Boston Lodge, the resulting product would provide a learning curve for future MW rebuilds, as indeed it has, and from that, a batch build could go forward with confidence and appropriate cost savings.
    Also it was felt that Yeo would be a diversion of funds away from Lyn.

    No - it means that Beckford deleted the content of their post.
    Yeo will re-emerge at some stage as the railway is committed to building all 4 MWs in due course (no doubt as modernised versions as they did with Lyn).

    I'm wondering whether the question was more directed at what becomes of the existing set of MW frames already assembled?

    Someone opined a while ago that these wouldn't be suitable, though the reason eludes me. The possibilities might include significant alterations in the light of experience with Blodge's superb looking newbuild, "Lyd" (technically, I believe that due to purchase of the Company's title by fforces behind the build, it's a pukka Manning Wardle), if so it will be interesting to see what additional mods become incorporated in the forthcoming MW triplets.

    I can't for the life if me think why they wouldn't be usable. It's just frame plates and headstocks, held together by temporary stretchers, unless it would be more economical with a batch-build to just start again from scratch.

    Here in Norway we had also more engines delivered from Baldwin, and in that colour scheme you refer to. They must have looked great in that livery!

    One engine, with much similarity to "Lyn" ,is this 1898-build ,narrow gauge (750mm) from Baldwin. http://pix.njk.no/34/34051-n00020-holand.jpg

    This engine was delivered to the 56 km narrow gauge (750mm) branch line "Urskog- Høland" railway ,outside our capital (Oslo). It was given no.3 and named "Høland"(after the local council) Unfurnately the engine wasn`t successful. The boiler couldn`t deliever the sufficient steam to the cylinders , resulting in frequently stop in the incline. It was written off in 1924 and scrapped.

    Its a handsome engine, and the similarities are striking.
    Something I've always wondered is why wood-burning engines needed those huge conical- shaped tops to their smokestacks. Any ideas?

    The LYN boiler was built to the same size as the original and this one packs a punch at 200psi, the old LYN was also the more powerful loco on the L&BR not that I am bias you understand, as I have said else where LYN was the only L&BR loco design for the Line it is suspected that the manning Wardle Locos where a half built reject contact and where going so cheap they could not be refused, there are also a number of other reason why the L&BR could not get a forth 2-6-2 at the same time, we have found out that a forth MW would have cost almost the same as the three others put together. Plus there would have been a time delay of about a year plus before it could have been built.

    Here is your Christmas question for anyone to see if they can come up with a decent theory, if the L&BR had of got a forth MW would it have been called 'LYN'? or something else? suggestions in a reply are acceptable.

    A fourth [sic] MW should have been called TED (yes, there is a river of that name!). Sounds friendly :D
