Excuse my ignorance but I was wondering whether there are any significant differences in sound between N2 & N7 tanks? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

The N2 is a Great Northern design by Gresley, and the N7 is a Great Eastern design by Hill, for starters, one worked out of Kings Cross (N2) the other out of Liverpool Street (N7). Edit, sorry, just re read and you asked about how they sounded! With the N7 having an air pump, that gives it a distinctive 'pant' when stationary.

Not much difference in sound. Main difference I have noticed is that the N2 exhaust just sounds meatier. Probably because the sound us generated inside a bigger smoke box than the N7.

We had N7s at Hatfield shed (34C) and they did occasionally work trains to Kings Cross, theN2s were the regular locos for that service, though.

You can certainly tell the difference between the two if you get a chance to listed to any sound recordings.

Presume they were for the branches to St Albans, Luton and Hertford.
