The big shiny things at the front of the train (unless it's a 'BR 1960's Gala' Event, in which case ... the big filthy things!) aren't much without everything else needed to run a railway.

If reconstructing some lost design provides the spur neccessary to priotitise restoration of appropriate stock which is kicking around, steadily deteriorating at so many locations ..... great! I'm eagerly anticipating the C4 series, which I hope will serve to raise the profile of C&W activities and (with a bit of luck) encourage increased interest in an area that's too often been seen as the Cinderella of heritage lines. There must be so many chippies out there who'd love to prove to the public that there's more to their craft than MDF and crapboard.

If we're discussing matters such as a new batch of Fox Patent Pressed Steel Bogies, or how to replicate the look of Mansell wheels next year, we'll know it's done some good. If discussions reach replica Y shaped spoked wheels for Victorian goods vehicles, the case for new build period locos will begin to make more sense to me than the notion of (say) a Metro Tank hauling chocolate & cream MKII's!

I agree , in that C&W are in many cases the forgotten area, but its changing as Railways realise the thow it away buy another off BR days are over and that the "customer" will not put up with poor coaches. but for many of us we are still fixated on whats hauling it, re making something from the past that didnt make it, theres nothing wrong in that, i happen to love the outline of an Edwardian beauty, just as much as the modernistic lines of a standard, but its the industry as a whole, that has enabled us to turn a dream into a reality, if we as a result of the channel 4 program talk about restoring more coaches, or if it leads to a group of volunteers at a railway, being inspired to say to the management, we want to restore that old coach, then thats got to be good.
I for one can imagine what beachy head will look like in Southern Green at the head of a restored Southern olive green rake, thats what preservation should be , re creating for the future what we can.

Alternatively, send quite a few people here on a fact facing course, to somewhere like the Dartmouth Steam Railway.

I thought you said you'd had enough of 'tweaking gricer's tails', or can you just not help yourself? The whole thread is whimsy, a flight of fancy - virtually none of the ideas will come to pass - but you just can't help it.

Then I suggest you direct your ill-calculated ire at the originator of the post, not me.

Don't worry mate. PH represents nobody but himself and while he keeps on telling the rest of us that we have got it wrong, we carry on doing our own thing and keeping the heritage railways the rich and varied movement it is. Doom mongers have been predicting the demise of the movement since the year dot but they've not been proved right yet.

For what it's worth, I had 7812 on 10 Mk1s at the SVR ASG. We stopped at Bewdley P.1,(4 coaches), Arley, (6), Highley,(5) and Hampton Loade,(4ish). Reported casualties at Bridgnorth - 0. 8 full coaches + 2 fully booked diners. Watch our ascent of Eardington Bank on Youtube, It's brilliant. The Manor is a Class 4, anything smaller would have struggled.
Had Taw Valley on 10 on the 1940s weekend at night - absolutely brilliant. Same number of casualties.

Impossible to quantify the pleasure given to many, but I believe it is massive. That's what we are about - we're in showbiz, and regardless of what certain miseries may think, it's our business.

On topic, and LMS Class 4MT. Please.

I'll tell you something, Knut - if I ever played the Euromillions lottery here in the UK and were fortunate enough to win it, there'd be an awful lot of 'new builds' happening in very short order! The GER C15 and C53 tram engines, the Robinson 'Pom-Pom' but most of all, that beautiful Sturrock 2-4-0 (plus chuck a few quid at the A1SLT) - and I'd even consider carriage new builds to go behind the Sturrock :)

I mean, what else would you do with that sort of money? It's far too much money to comprehend, I have seen first-hand how a lottery win can go sour so make lots of people happy by building lost engines, creating jobs and giving people something to enjoy, I say.
