Or back to 1890 for a Broad Gauge 4-4-0T or 4-2-4T? Nothing like them around now! It would have to be from a class that no longer exists, rather than another from a class already in preservation, so if the limit applies a K Class 2-6-0 would be neat and useful.

From the David Hey collection site.

This loco, restored to this condition, providing more or less the final important gap to be filled in ECML Pacific representatives.

I'd go for a Great Central 9A, 9C or 9F, as an example of the first class in Britain to be built with a Belpaire firebox.

So many classes I'd love to see (D15, 700, T1, 141P, 240P etc, etc, etc) but when it comes down to picking a single locomotive, for purely sentimental reasons I'd be sneaking 62618 out of the scrap lines.

ok so my choice if a Diesel would be the Midland Pullman, a groundbreaking design which I am surprised one wasn't saved for the NRM, at least a power car and ideally a whole train

For Steam so many worthy contenders, but it would have to be LNER or LMS as there is already plenty of GWR and SR locomotives. My first choice is the Claud Hamilton D16/3, would look ideal at East Dereham or Sheringham, lots of other LMS or LNER types to choose too.

If we were going back still further to the inter-ware years, it would be B172 Littlehampton, the last of the Gladstones for me.

    I would suggest

    10000/10001, or
A LNER design - you choose but as they didn't do well in preservation, or
A Broad Guage loco, probably an Iron Duke class
