You have a time machine and you can go back to the 50s/60s and save one Engine. Which would it be ?

3MT 82000. First of the batch, it worked on the Severn Valley branch in the early 60s, and it would have saved the 82045 Fund a lot of hard work recreating one!

Would we though? I dare say there'd be something else we're not doing right!

Not quite matching the OP's original spec, but for me, a full 6-car Class 124 Transpennine set, complete with buffet. The most stylish and iconic First Generation Railcar by far, and sheer vandalism that not a shread of one survived.

I think I would be heading to the Lambton railway; they had an 0-6-0t with vague Stockton and Darlington origins, industrial 0-6-0 tender engines and failing that another Lambton 0-6-2 tank would not have come amiss.

Bit of a left field one - GWR 849 - one of the last three ex Cambrian Jones Goods locos. Would give me a bit of everything - nearest thing likely to get to a steamable Dean Goods (as it would have been in reboilered condition), mix of my two favourie railways (GWR and Cambrian), something from the Cambrian to survive, and a pretty useful little engine for preserved lines. 849 of the three is just because it was based at Mach so on the coast section which has always been my greater interest. Survived to 1954 which just about gets in range of our time machine.

I'd see if I could alter the settings on the time machine from the 1950's and 60's and go back to the 1900's at Swindon works and ensure the broad gauge Lord of the Isles is kept for posterity.

I thought that some of the buffets survived ... Or were those from a different unit?

While I'm back could I have a word (and stuff some cash in his pocket) with James Ness and see if could be persuaded to let the Scotish quartet go south for a bit longer...

The driving wheels from this Engine survive and you can see them in the entrance of the Steam museum.

Three Class 126 "Inter City" buffets were preserved (although just one remains today) and were quite different internally to the 124's, of which non survive. I think the surviving 126 buffet (@ Bo'ness) has a corridor and compartments as well, which I find very strange for a buffet car!

The Thompson Buffet at Llangollens a bit strange, think it only seats 16, I still want it as my private saloon should the Euromillions come in!

Whilst I'm in the time machine, I'll also stop off and lynch Marples and Beeching before they embark on their disastrous campaign of railway wrecking.

Illogical answer , but one that would spare a lot of debate would be an A3 , none especially in preference so I will let NP member choose their favourite

second , A Dean Goods as just perfect GWR engine

Fowler 2P and 4P would be high up my list , as would a Caledonian 4-4-0

I always thought the Taff Vale A class/GWR hybrids were lovely little machines that got the job done, and could have survived, but alas:-

Not that it matters anyway. Time travel is impossible as its a violation of the Laws of Conservation of mass and energy. I'll have to settle for the next best thing, buy a model.
