Sorry can't agree with that, parent should be responsible for the conduct of their offspring. You are held liable for your dog so dpchildren should be no different. Second offenc should be custodial sentence with a condition that you work while ins Dems for the minimum wage until it's paid off, no excuses. I'm getting fed up with the bleeding hearts making excuses for these people

First of all, thankfully it looks like the damage is fairly minor and shouldn't take too long to repair. I've travelled on these coaches and I'm sad to see them in that state.

As for the perpetrators, a jail sentence is the last thing they need if they are young and impressionable first offenders- and this doesn't look like the work of an expert! If they are thrown in prison they will discover drugs and all manner of unpleasant things. Always in these cases I would recommend that the youths be "recruited" by the railway to help repair the damage and perhaps carry out other tasks as well. Who knows, they might discover some pride in themselves and their work which might lead to better things than merely punishing them. Norway thinks like that and they have a very low reoffending rate.

 

You're not held liable in civil law should your dog bite someone or it destroys property, only if you know that dog has a propensity to bite. In addition there are certain statutory provisions for dangerous breeds of dog.

Equally I dislike the vengeful and impracticable demands made by some of the justice system. I guess we'll both have to get over our despair

As a naïve young liberal minded person I can't help but feel a wee bit uncomfortable reading this thread.

The actions of whoever did this are deplorable, absolutely. If someone were to do the same to our carriages I would be very upset and angry.

But I find it rather uncivilised to be seriously calling for the return of capital punishment, torture, beatings etc. It just doesn't sit right that folk here claim to be looking down on whoever did this from such great height metaphorically, yet recommend such barbarism so readily.

 

Strip down to (probably) bare metal for Collett 3rd 1146 and start from there. As for GNR 2701, depends how the spray paint has penetrated the varnish. If it hasn't, a partial sanddown might be alright, otherwise back to the wood might necessary. Double shame as 2701 has gold leaf lining.

 

On modern trains, graffiti is basically just cleaned off leaving the original paint untouched underneath.

Don't know if that's possible in this case, or if modern trains have a special paint finish to allow this?

 

A lot of modern stock has 'vinyl' covers. Presumably the plastic used is resistant to any solvents used in spray paint.

 

I think you will find you are responsible in law for your dog and I don't find anything impracticable about punishing criminals

I think that this case is rather exceptional

 

I find the disrespect of other people's property by some elements of our society quite disturbing, and depressing. When I was growing up my parents and my school teachers taught me to respect other people and their property. Something which doesn't seem to be done these days.

As regards to vandalism and graffiti, part of me likes the idea of 'sentencing' the offenders to clearing up the mess and restoring what they've damaged. It might give them a sense of achievement and maybe pride in what they've restored and encourage them to channel their energies into something constructive because I think some them perpetrators are just doing it out of boredom.

Sadly however there are those who get a twisted kind of pleasure out of smashing things and spraying paint over them. If you get such people to clean up the mess they've made they're very likely to go back a few days later to smash things up again as a sort of perverse form of revenge.

 

When these little cretins are caught make them put right what they've done wrong, there are so many things that need a coat of paint on a railway, give them a brush and tell them to start at Kiddy and finish at Bridgo...
