On the whole red is the more impressive colour but the LMS style is a bit ornate for my taste. If 45699 was done following the authentic BR maroon style I think it would look splendid albeit not strictly correct. Would very much like to see 46115 in BR maroon (or blue!).

Not quite right , the 1946 livery looks very nice and a few were in BR lined black for a time as per Leander although for the pendantic 45690 should have BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender rather than the totem.

LMS maroon is nice so 5699 properly finished would be good as there will soon be a lined green Jubilee back in service. 46115 in anything other than LMS 1946 black, without smoke deflectors or BR green is just plain wrong.

Well 6233 should soon fill the LMS maroon gap for you and 45596 will be fabulous in BR green.
I am less concerned about strict loco/livery match provided the style and shade are correct.

I believe 6233 was the only Duchess to survive the war in red to have smoke deflectors fitted before going into 1946 Black so as authentic as you can get. As for style and shade are concerned I agree apart from the fact there is no style or shade of red for a rebuilt Scot.

There was a shade and style of BR maroon, just not applied to Scots, that is the distinction I make. So 35005 in BR blue looked smart, although "wrong", because it followed the stylistic cues of the livery as applied to other classes.

On that basis you can paint a loco in any colour you want, apart from pink virtually every shade and hue has been used somewhere at some time

Well it is of course true the ultimate choice is that of the owner but, to clarify my view, I am happy to see any livery from "steam days" applied to any loco provided the shade and style follows the official "criteria" of the day which I presume are historically documented in terms of shades, lining width, numeral size etc.

I actually like both on Jubilee's, not keen on the post war LMS black though

You should check out Colour Rail image LM70 on their website. It looked ok. Better than lined BR black, anyway! Looks fine on a 5P5F (although proper lined LMS livery also nice, hope we see it again soon) but silly on a 5XP.
Black 5 should be black, and Red 5 should be red... Although green suited them better than most LMS types, perhaps because the boiler profile was still rather Swindonian.
Rebuilt Scot looks best in red - as "authentically" worn by the prototype British Legion and "historically" by 6100 (or the loco we are pleased to call 6100) - for longer than any other livery. I did like 1946 LMS express lined black on 6115 also. I actually rather like the rebuilt Scots without deflectors. Those deflectors must have been largely useless, they are too short! Wouldn't mind seeing one in experimental LMS blue/grey, too (Jube or Scot).

Actually my previous post was wrong, 6115 was the only Scot to appear in 1946 livery with deflectors. What you are saying is that 6100 was wrong for more years than it carried any other livery. I'm not sure about the deflectors as I haven't read about any complaints from loco crews. Why did one carry BR standard deflectors though?

I actually prefer the BR version of lined black to the LMS one. But I do like the LMS red on some locos, although not on Duchesses as I thought they didn't look right without smoke deflectors

I prefer the LMS Crimson Lake, but BR Green is also okay and matches the Mark 1 coaches they are more likely to run with. The only thing I really don't like is Black. Leander painted black makes it look like a Black 5. It is a shame more Jubilees didn't survive. I would happily have less Bulleid Pacifics if it meant we could have a few more LMS and LNER express locos instead.
