This picture shows a interesting british diesel locomotive, unknown for me, but I like the design of it!:) I guess it`s not survived the scrappers torch?:(

It seems to have been build above the same "last" as the class 22 (yet another new build)

I rather liked the look of those myself, but they suffered from the typical North British diesel build quality, i.e. appalling.

What is interesting to me is the plea "do not remove parts, please" painted along the lower body line. I wonder why - was there any interest in saving it at the time?

Just a guess from me: not remove parts so they could got as much scrap value as possible from the unit?

Do you know if it was the diesel engine in the locomotive that suffered problems?

There were various schemes to save the diesels at Barry but nothing came of them and they were cut up. They were a real mess inside with missing parts and i undestand also people using them as loos.

Remember seeing it on at least one of my trips to Barry.
Was that photo taken in the top yard?

I had a run behind D602 Bulldog from Penzance to Plymouth on the Cornish Riviera on a Saturday at the end of August 1961. At Plymouth D867 went on the other end and we proceeded to Paddington via Okehampton, Exeter Central, Basingstoke and Reading complete with delays at Cowley Bridge Jct. Try Googling Landslip at Lavington 1961 for the story. My Mum and Dad were not happy!

An activity that was transferred to the 20t brake vans if what I saw on my one and only visit in 1986 is any indication.

One of the big disadvantages of the first batch of Warships (D600 - D604) was their weight coupled with a A1A-A1A wheel arrangement. They were built on conventional lines of a girder frame whereas the second generation Warships (D800 on) were built with stress bearing bodywork. This resulted in better weight to power characteristics. Where the D600 class did come into there own was on unfitted coal trains in the Welsh valleys because of the better braking characteristics.
However they were already scheduled for withdrawal due to being non standard so didn't fulfil their dubious potential.

The D600, D800 and D6200 all used a variation of the same engine. The NBL built MAN L12V engines. A good idea for standardisation but the engine units were poorly built.
