    Richard Newton's annual post Christmas Foxfield bash was blessed with mixed weather this year with the underlying theme being very cold. The loco was temporary resident RSH 0-4-0ST no 7063/1942

    Thanks, as you can see we got everything from snow flurries to sunshine with an underlying theme of very cold. The first three were in the dullest flat light and needed 5000ISO to achieve 250th second. How did we manage in the days of film?

    Even with a newer camera, I'm still wary about going over 1600 ISO! I think my next investment is going to be a decent zoom for it - I'm tempted by this.

    I know there has been some discussion about this on another thread but a modern camera should be OK at a lot more than that. I need to do some noise reduction over about 3200ISO but I have gone up to the top at 25600 ISO for steam on the Underground. I'm not impressed with PS noise reduction and I use a plugin called Neat Image and there is a facility in the free Google Nik software. It's a compromise though, overdo it and you begin to lose detail.

    When you think about it, there was a 3200ASA Ilford film, but the most you'd have got was 400ASA - and remember what HP4 was like for grain? Somewhere I have a photo of a (proper) Class 44 "Peak" taken from a signalbox window during snowfall in/around 1980 and it's hard to tell the grain from the snow...
