Thank you Andrew for the posting; IMHO the only thing missing was (a) membership details for early members (especially sponsors) uncertain of their current membership status and (b) contact details for various officials. Doubtless these will appear on the website once updates have been applied.

Just off the phone after a lengthy conversation with our chief engineer Paul Etherington, who is certainly the man with the plan.
In the next couple of weeks he is going to write out the plan of action for dismantling the 58.
His preference would be for a team to assist in taking the whole thing apart, to the frame line, in one week or so. Clearly the planning will take a lot longer than the "doing".
I look forward to seeing this process moving forward.

One thing you may have to consider is insurance, LMS Carriage Association volunteers working at Rowsley have to be Peak Rail members as we are then covered by their policy.

    All Best

    From minutes posted [#81] above:
"Website management. The reason the Society seemed dormant lay with no recent, active information update on any aspect of the Society web pages. DK was tasked via Tony Ellershaw of Leicester to unlock the website and make the pages reflect latest developments. The meeting recognised that the media and the public were hungry for news [my italics].It was agreed the newsflow should not be left solely to the lively, enthusiastic chatter on Facebook."

On behalf of all us armchair lurkers watching the project: Hallelujah!

no -you're wrong - you really do wanna hear it thrashed. I still remember the deep throbbing bass of two Ivatts on the Royal Scot , running north thro Harrow .you could feel the sound waves hitting your chest .
best diesels ever - unforgettable . - what I do forget is whether 10000 still carried its chrome number in the '50s .maybe someone can enlighten me - I think it did but...

the southern trio were ok but didn't have the presence and panache of the LMS pair

  7. Both locos carried their raised metal numbers throughout their lives. When in green livery the numbers were painted white or off-white.

70 years ago this month a major milestone happened in the UK railway industry.

On 18 December 1947, the LMS presented it's brand new mainline diesel locomotive number 10000 to the world.

Scanned off a 2-1/4" x 3-1/4" contact print that I took about 1958. Probably at Willesden.

I think this is a good project to recreate the diesel but cant help but think, would it not be easier/better to save one of the many older diesels going for scrap such as class 08s, 31s, 47s, 37s etc ?

Forgive me for asking, but what is distinctive about any of those given how many have already been preserved?

  13. Seeing a photo of any loco with its nose end doors open is a comparative rarity. Fascinating pic.

This diesel-locomotive must be one of the best looking (or the best looking) build in Britain!:) I really hope it will be a successful project.

Of diesel newbuilds, probably true. It's fortunate we don't need a new build 'Wizzo' which are (IMO) bead and shoulders above any other British diesel, looks wise ..... and the Hymeks come a close second ... and no prizes for guessing which diesel lump I love the sound of either! :)

I always thought early British diesel design was poor until the Design Panel came along. It's true that designers were hampered by constraints like connecting doors and various headcode systems, but IMO nothing came close to the GM 'E' units. I would love to see LMS 10000 recreated, but I don't think it will win any beauty contests.

Hello, would it be possible for the Ivatt Diesel Recreation Society to use this image? If so, could you please send a copy direct to us at ivattdiesel@gmail.com

  19. I think 10201-03 are wonderful-looking things. Everything Bulleid did for the Southern had a glorious touch of the art deco about it :)

Not sure I share your enthusiasm. Too much of a box with round edges. A child of its time though.

I notice in this photograph that these locos were generously provided with a smoker's window half-way down the fuselage.
