I can not recall any NDT testing on 35018 and there was no mention back then of 35018 having any BR era cylinder cracks welded up or requiring any cylinder work we in the loco, were told,"she just needs boiler work" but then, she did spend a lot of time in open storage so who knows what damage was done in between then and now

Yeah on recollection I think that was me seeing the boiler being lifted, however I am not sure if the boiler later seen outside was a Bulleid or Stanier one as I assume if work was being done the boiler would be inside (BTW its not the Bulleid one painted silver which has been outside for ages and I assume is that from 34073?

Whoa! Let's back things up a little! Firstly, I comment where and when I choose and when something sits rightly or wrongly I may well do so.

So now that the well-worn, dog eared 'victim' card has just been dealt from the bottom of the pack (again!).....I don't believe I have ever questioned your motives. I don't believe I have ever said anything personal. However, seeing as you are on your 'personal remarks' high horse, I do believe you intimated that I had "the smallest mind" in a recent post.

Time to let it go. :)

Certainly I do not feel victimised but I do perceive my posts seem to be red rag to a bull in your case, most often accompanied by whinges that I am an axe grinder, grudge holder, drum banger etc without any attempt to debate the opinion I proffer. As a number of people have pointed out my opinions are generally confined to a narrow theme of fairness in selling but I do not recall you ever countering my view, for example, that more should be done to ensure customers of charter operators get a fair deal.
Today you joined the fray only to point out the information I shared is vague. I agree but that was obvious and did not require your input, particularly, to emphasise it and I think it unlikely you would have remarked had someone else been the OP.
As to you being "small minded" the full context was "sarcasm is the biggest weapon of the smallest mind" in response to your self acknowledged remark in that vein about one of my posts. Once again I think you only seemed compelled to respond to me, so I am just putting 2 and 2 together. I very much encourage you to stay involved but please only respond to my opinions if you have a genuinely alternative view to challenge me with rather than just pointing out you simply don't like what I write.

Yes I think it was confirmed some while ago the silver boiler is off 34073 though its future use, 34067 or 34016, not announced.

Better to identify these problems now, than when she is promised for mainline running, and let people down.

I would wonder why the "crack", was not identified during the rebuilt, would it/should it have been subject to ultrasonic testing????

Nothing inflammatory, just a genuine question based on the visual evidence from every time BIL was seen running. And as @guycarr360 says, the problem was not apparent or discovered during the rebuild, it seems.

I guess that all this business does is illustrate how incredibly complicated any loco restoration can be. And just because you have completed one doesn't necessarily mean that the next one will be any more straightforward.

Eh?? where's that gem come from? I can't recall that ever being mention............,anywhere.
In your post #2291you talk of a 'brand new cylinder being manufactured', that;s not for the faint hearted...........or cheap.
Knowing 10A's secrecy in these matters you seem to be remarkably well informed, hell, we couldn't know the colour of the thing not long ago, now the talk is of a new cylinder required.

My comment wasn't meant to be inflammatory, the reason I mention it, is that the overhaul of 60007, is accompanied by a weekly update with pictures, and explanation of what is being done. The use of ultrasonic testing / NDT testing is quite thorough, and I thought everybody would do the same.

I wouldn’t want to underestimate the complexity, but I get a distinct impression that big castings such as cylinders have got distinctly more “doable” over the last ten years or so - I think due to the ability to go from CAD to poly pattern more easily than traditional drawing to traditional pattern.

What may therefore be more of an issue would be lead time than outright cost.

Its a fools errand to attempt to understand the reasoning for being devoutly uncommunicative but it does create a viscious circle. As the Italian writer Primo Levi said "silence, the absence of signals, is itself a signal but an ambiguous one and ambiguity generates suspicion."
Insularity is more commonly a small business characteristic but quite obviously though it is literally their business, its just a shame when they operate within an environment that generates significant public interest which would otherwise be wholly supportive.

There was an image of a well advanced cylinder pattern on Facebook recently . Middle single cylinder as well .

Subsequently alluded to as for 46115 . Now there is no basis to the posting, can I find the image , sadly no and could I identify a Bulleid Cylinder vs a Royal Scot one ... er no

The amount of steam coming from somewhere on 35018 on its test runs suggested something wasn't quite right .

If it is indeed the RH cylinder, then the 35010 lot might have been interested, as I believe the same side was fractured, prompting 'Blue Star's withdrawal.

The picture is still there and I understand the cylinder is for 46115.
