Thinking out of the box perhaps but is it time to consider a central buying agency (e.g. under the auspices of the RHA or Network Rail) to bulk buy such items as coal, diesel fuel and rails ? Apart from the obvious cost reduction the benefit of bulk purchase might be sufficient to justify a niche market for production of items.

MODS : If you think this warrants a posting on its please feel free to set up a separate thread; I feel this is a worthy discussion piece - with thanks to Sidmouth for opening the topic.

Coal is the most obvious candidate for a central buying agency, I feel, if only to provide justification to suppliers to keep sourcing it. After that I would say rail offers the best opportunity for bulk buying, again to keep the type of rail needed by heritage lines in production. Somehow, however,, such an ambitious plan would have to be funded, and how many lines have the resources to plan and buy in bulk any length of time ahead of requiring the material?

That rings true in the case of the SVR. The majority the track was relaid between 1971 and 1981, much of it with the help of the Manpower Services Commission (if only they were still around today!). A number of bridges were also replaced during that period as part of the work to upgrade the line for heavier locos. This map by Roger Norfolk from SVR News 58, Winter 80/81, gives an idea of the amount of work done.

The 2018 timetable leaflets were printed prior to 1450's repaint. The repaint was not widely known about within SVR circles until my photos of it appeared on the SVR Unofficial Facebook page on 30th December.

In fact, 1501 rides quite smoothly. This was a surprise to many when it was first restored, as it had been widely predicted to be rough, for the reason you mentioned.
I was also riding behind it on that day, as my mate Mick was driving. I went up and back on the first trip, but he tells me that his last trip back was a bit special. I assume that was the one you came back on. He was my fireman one week a year for the last 19 years. We have many cherished memories.

    Thanks for that, jtx.

Clearly a special day for all concerned.

    Here's to more 1501 haulage in 2018.

    ...and 7714 as well!

    Interesting.

Bridgnorth boiler shop's workload includes significant incoming contract work on five new IoM boilers, Dunrobin and 46464. I wonder if Bridgnorth will take 4150's too?
