Well, E9124E will be returning in BR livery, if that helps.

Absolutely.... mix and match rakes where not at all unusual on 'cross border' services both pre and post nationalisation. Usually loco changes took place at some convenient spot so locos working 'foreign' stock was a daily occurrence. Stock was provided by both companies with workings taking place in each direction on alternate days.

To illustrate - I am fortunate enough to hold copies of detailed notes taken at Eastleigh during the 20s and 30s including several occasions when every movement in daylight on that day was recorded. One such was 4th June 1927 (Whit Saturday) when the following relevant to this discussion were seen:

1103 - Bournemouth- Birkenhead (a daily working with loco change normally at Oxford). Hauled by Arthur E791 with 11 GWR corr and 1 LMS corr. Loco returned at 1616 with 11 SR corridors.

1225 - Bournemouth - Newcastle with T9 E303 on 11 LNER corr. Return working with same set at 1715.

1612 - Birmingham - Bournemouth with Saint 2948 on through working. Recorded as 11 non-corr stock!

None of the above were apparently specials.

To have been there with a modern camera!!

With digital technology does it really matter if your favourite loco is not in the livery you want. Here's 46233 in BR blue

Probably more to the point that we should be thankful we still have the huge variety of locos and stock to enjoy, regardless of what livery they wear or whether the loco and stock match.

Now with the engine in blue livery, the coaches should really be Crimson and Cream.

    Sorry, which way's the door?

And almost certainly, the carriages shouldn't be Mark 1s, and certainly not on Commonwealth bogies, in any case!

I knew someone would say that but you didn't spot the AWS battery box in front of the cab or bang plate under the bufferbeam!

Not sure the reversing light on the Ford Prefect is original. Think it's been pimped up. Lovely shot.

Well, whatever the debate, that's a great photo of a very handsome loco!

I've got in front of me a splendid photo of Duchess of Devonshire in BR blue with a crimson and cream set in the Last be gorge... I won't post it as it's a Colour Rail image and presumably therefore copyright, but you can check it out on their website (photo ref BRM1389).
    Yummy.

The photo has been Photoshopped, but not in that way; I positioned the car exactly as shown. The Photoshopping (i) converted it from colour to B/W; and (ii) removed a couple of kids on bikes and in modern attire who rolled up at the last second. Unfortunately, I didn't have a gun so had to do it this way.

Thanks for the kind comments, and also to Andrew.

Not too bothered about them, it's the daft little crown above the nameplate that irritates me!

Point them at a railway model website; just taken delivery of the 2018 Hornby catalogue and there's plenty of 'Big 4' stock in crimson and cream in there. Equally, some good photo album books taken around the period of nationalisation to about 1953. You'll see coaches and even locomotives bearing their pre-1948 livery. It's a period I find absolutely fascinating.

On the subject of painting overnight; I remember arriving into Kings Cross the day after NatEx took over from GNER. NatEx staff were applying white NatEx vinyl stripes over the red GNER ones :D

Oh to see that A4 as LNER no.7 in garter blue with red wheel sets. That would be magical.

It is incredible to think that in a very short space of time on the LNER you could see, in no particular order:

    A4s in garter blue
    A4s in express passenger blue
A4s in the short lived "purple" (experimental) livery
    A3s in apple green
    A3s in express blue
A3s in the short lived "purple" (experimental) livery
    Thompson Pacifics in apple green
    Peppercorn A2s in apple green
    Peppercorn A1s in apple green
Peppercorn A1s in express passenger blue
    V2s in mixed traffic black
    V2s in wartime black
    One V2 in apple green
Thompson B1s in LNER black lined red
    Thompson B1s in apple green...

    You get the picture!

That was the years 1949-50. Almost all LNER coaching stock was still teak (Gresley) or "scumbled" (Thompson), there were no MK1s at all. There were a few select Gresley and Thompson coaches in "plum" livery (experimental). You could have an express passenger blue loco (60007) at the head of a rake of teaks quite easily. It is one of my favourite combinations.

Back in BR Blue then...? Have to say, it's been in BR Express Passenger Blue for nearly 20 years now, isn't a change due? I'd favour - unsurprisingly, but only if authentic - E7 with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the side and in Garter Blue. Or, what Simon sez ;)!

I suppose we're fortunate that we have three running A4s all in different liveries that reflect their history.

Don’t get me wrong - love the Express blue. My favourite livery on any locomotive and the A4s suit it so well.
