Personally I’m not hugely worried about locomotives in specific liveries but would certainly agree there has been a heavy unbalance towards BR Liveries. Aged 27 I’ve only ever known steam in preservation and I’m looking forward to seeing 1264 in a livery I’ve not yet seen.

I think it’s nice to have variety. A great example of recent years has been the E4 at the Bluebell. It’s 1998 overhaul in LBSC colours before wearing BR Black and then after another overhaul appearing in SR colours.

It would be great to see some of the more regularly overhauled locos in some other authentic liveries. An example, there aren’t many Manors that can legitimately carry GW colours and it would be nice to see any of the SVR three in any gwr livery to match their Carriages. However, if it’s your engine you have the right to paint it however you like.

60007 in garter blue actually - wouldn’t have been E7 I think. I’ll check that though...

At least couple of the Isle of Wight pre-grouping carriages are in BR liveries. Personally, I don't think it does them any favours - older carriages seem to benefit from lining, IMHO.

Only the one now Tom, LBSCR 6349 was repainted into malachite last year. Only one of the present bogie fleet can legitimately be in SR lined livery, at present the set is of uniform livery of Malachite with class numbers on the doors.. Four or five years ago the set was marshalled in such a way that the liveries progressed through time, from Malachite with class numbers on the doors through to BR Crimson.

When the linear scrapyard is cleared and everything is in service all of the possible liveries will be done over time, from fully lined SR Olive green through to BR Green. Their may even be a 4 wheel set in IWR varnished teak !

Incidentally painting a couple of the bogie coaches into BR Crimson made one ex BR driver of Calbourne very very happy, sometimes their are very different reason's for livery changes.

Oh no, here we go again... ;) :p

I have to say that the first time I saw any mainline steam was in about 1998? And it was 60007 with a rake of crimson and cream Mk. 1s - and I thought it looked fabulous. I can then remember sitting down with my copy of Paint Shop Pro and carefully removing all the overhead wires and masts!

    Thanks for that, Simon. :)

Incidentally, there's a model of the L1 in the new Hornby catalogue that has it turned out in LNER green, with LNER on the bodyside, but a BR number.

I only said it because you used the word authentic! Reducing a double Kylchap to a single chimney would be an interesting PS exercise.

Don't worry, I knew ;) It would be an interesting exercise, but I doubt it'd do the performance of an A4 any good...

Likewise, how about 60103 back as 1472 with "L. & N. E. R." and the number on the (coal-rail) tender and a single chimney? (Think I've got that right, Simon?)

For the first a PS change wouldn't make any difference to the real thing just leave you with a fake picture. When the non operational Bittern was painted silver to represent no 2500 they did fit it with a single chimney. For FS you would also need a new cab and boiler. Suggest it to the NRM. You may well get a two word answer. If you mean a PS conversion, life's too short!

Now you're talking! On pure aesthetics, and ignoring the (undoubtedly sound) reasons for later modifications, I always felt that Flying Scotsman looked at its most handsome in that form, and every subsequent modification somehow diminished the appearance. I think it has a lot to do with the boiler fittings and cab being reduced to fit a less generous loading gauge, which gives the later forms a more hulking, less graceful, look.

Have now checked this. 60007 in garter blue with red wheel sets is correct - the number would be in the incorrect "curly six" style, British Railways in bold on tender, it would be white and not cream coloured numbers/lettering.

So there's a lot of things that would need changing. In no particular order:

    No superheater headers
    180lb boiler with round dome
    Original tall GNR cab
    Original tall GNR chimney
Squared off buffer beam as per originals
Original type valve gear (no long travel)
New tender (original GNR coal rail tender)
    Single chimney and original exhaust

So effectively, a new locomotive. You may as well build a new Gresley A1 - bearing in mind it wouldn't fit on the national network due to height of chimney and cab

The closest you could get would be to swap Mallard's tender over (both tenders are accurate for the A3 and A4) and change to a single chimney - you could then have no.E103 in LNER apple green with British Railways on the tender - and this would be the only form accurate to 60103 without any more modifications than that.

If you accept the Pegler era (and I do) just change to a single chimney and repaint. Et voila! If you really want something spectacular, borrow the second tender from Jeremy Hosking (who owns it now) and paint it as per the double tender era (my favourite era of her preservation career, bar this current one).

I actually think that looks good. (possibly because I’ve recently built a Ratio kit of a similar looking, Midland, suburban, and I can’t be bothered with lining!)

It is one of my personal favourites too ! But we do like to ring the changes at Havenstreet, keeping everything in the same livery no matter how much you favour it means it all gets a bit stale.

Newport C&W had a tendency to plate over (random bits of) once panelled IoW stock. Did any such carriages survive into preservation? If so, has the "tin plating" been kept, or panelling restored?
