West Somerset Railway General Discussion

Dieses Thema im Forum 'Heritage Railways & Centres in the UK' wurde von gwr4090 gestartet, 15 November 2007.

Agreed. That bit of the T&Cs is not clear so RMW's advice to contact the Plc would be most helpful for the Railway and the rest of us.

For the record, 20 years on and 50000+ images now online and I have had no request from the Plc to remove images from wsr.org.uk on the basis of that T&C clause.

    Don't panic!

Quite accept some variation. Era? WW2, I suppose, so pleased to see some examples.

Quite like the ‘stencil’ Look which is easy to reproduce.

Welsh Coal also sorted out Henry's steaming problems.

Only until Sir Toppam Hatt sent him to Crewe to let them sort him out properly.

He was only sent to Crewe after he crashed, not because of poor steaming with Welsh coal.

I was not panicing just pointing out that this seemed like the recent fiasco re the use of social mdia. The WSR are not alone in issuing T & Cs that have unexpected consquences because they are written by people who are not qualified to do so, amd then passed by higher authority who are also not qualified or possibly don't check things. There really is no excuse when they have an eminently qualfied volunteer who could advise them. :Muted:

These EU laws have changed for people taking photos of tourist attraction where the copy right belongs to the owner of what you took the photo of, and not the person who took the photo, and in some cases if you put a photo up on face book you could be prosecuted for doing this as you haven't paid a fee for the right to do this. The law was meant to only protect the owner of the building etc against people taking photos of it and selling these photos for their own profit, and the wording was so bad as normal that all people who take photos can be charged even if for their own use only. So most likely who sends out these tickets made sure this law was put on the T&C so they are covered.

Please can you cite the EU directive and the UK law that implements it? TIA

Stating as received and dried calorific values is of course a measurement of water content.

The figures for Bedwas and Blidworth I suggest emphasise the validity of as received calorific values.

    Ratios Bedwas : Blidworth
    As received coal, 13970 BThU/lb : 12930 BTh/U ie 1.080 : 1
    Evaporation lb/hr, 24190 lb/hr : 22490 lb/hr ie 1.076 : 1

In agreement with your reservation re dry figures.
    ( with dry coal figures 14220. : 13890 ie 1.023 : 1

I used to think that anthracite was a processed product but it is dug out of the ground at Foss Y Fran which is where our black stuff comes from.

Thank you for the link. I do not have a copy of Report No.1 ie 'Modified Hall". It perhaps helps quantify and therefore answer some of the recent debate wrt putative Welsh coal advantages and Swindon design. (I must state that I am not a fully paid up member of the Swindon Genuflecting Society. I have always thought by searching for and incorporating the best existing practice in Europe and N.America Mr Churchward placed the GWR at the forefront of UK loco development before WW1. From there they fell behind the other British Railways until the work of Messrs Ell, Cook and others at Swindon in the 1950s)

The curves for the Hall (No.7916) are based on firing Blidworth Hards and Markham coals. I note the following

"Tests possible to a steam rate in the cylinders of 22,000 lb/hr when 'Blidworth Hards', compared to maximum grate capacity. With 'Markham ' the maximum steam rate to the cylinders was 23,000lb/hr, which is just below the "Draught" or "Front End" limit for Welsh coal."

ie 'grate limited' with Blidworth, 'front end' limited with Markham

    ('Markham' 14330 BThU/lb as received, dry 14550BThU/lb)

The report notes that "Markham coal" has similar characteristics to "Welsh coal", although it comes from the Tredegar area ! (Perhaps an oblique reference to Monmouthshire for four centuries being dealt with as if it were not part of the Principality :)

    Michael Rowe

ps reading again it does also say "Markham as with other Welsh coals"

Many thanks Robin. As we ponder the machinations of the shade of olive we should use that very well informed David Rouse had some photographs, I think, from when these arrived at Bristol PBA in military livery. We have this being followed up by a member of the S&DRT who have been a great support to us.

Confusingly, there was a Markham Main in South Wales, a Markham in Derbyshire and another Markham Main in Yorkshire.

When I was in the retail coal trade - roughly = Welsh Steam coal was mined in the East of South Wales whereas, Anthracite ] a much harder and slower burning fuel was mined around the Swansea area.
