Had they been available a year or two ago, I think buying one and running it into the ground for two-three years would have been a sound, temporary move for the Swanage Railway.

Out of interest why are Pacers banned on the southern region?

Hypothetically speaking, could an exception be made to allow their use between Worgret and Wareham only?

I agree, this may have made sense. Not popular with people on here, but it could have fulfilled the Swanage railways objectives at least on a short term basis.

Off the top of my head I can't remember but wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with the third rail. I'm at work later today I'll try and find out the definitive answer.

Pacers are banned in passenger service on the Southern Region and I’m certain they have to be authorised to run under expectional circumstances.

It’s in the sectional appendix the exact wording.

It's because Southerners are Soft and couldn't deal with the ride of a pacer, so they're sent to Wales and up North.. :)

Eee, t's still grim oop north eh? We've had our share of white knuckle rides too .... ask anyone who ever suffered a 4CEP or 4EPB bouncing across St.John's flyover.

Now, they've given us cattle trucks that might ride better, but the seats are worse (and usually dirtier) than the clapped out Rail Replacement Buses, which look as if they've been dragged out of some scrap yard nearly every damned weekend.

Pacers are not cleared for 3rd rail areas, except in specially authorised circumstances.
Because their axleboxes are inside the “safe” clearance zone around 3rd rail.
There is a significant risk of an axlebox striking the 3rd rail, heightened by Pacers lively ride.

It shows you just how remarkable Sir Herbert Walker’s powers of foresight were, that he should choose a means of electrification over 100 years ago with the express intention of preventing the use of Pacers on the South’s railways in the 21st century, to the eternal gratitude of we passengers. :)

Makes sense. If they came to Eastleigh for overhaul via the Salisbury and Romsey line, then they would only have had to negotiate a short length of third rail line through Eastleigh station.

Everyone can breath a sigh of relief then, no chance of Swanage buying any pacers.

Most assuredly. Having seen the effects of a glancing indirect contact with the juice rail on a hairless pate (skin to black and peeling in the blink of an eye) many moons ago.....

T'was a member of BR(S) staff at Twickenham unwisely attempting to dislodge what looked like a length of bog chain, picked up by the leading offside collector shoe of a 4VEP with a broom handle. It was glaringly obvious that the chap in question was extremely fortunate to be able, with assistance, to walk to the ambulance. The sight (and smell) are something which remains indelibly etched into my memory over 30 years later and not something I'd ever want to see (or smell) again.

Are you allowed to run things in to the ground on the national network? Even if you are, is this business model a good way to operate a reliable public service?

Why do you think the writs are flying?
Because of the article you link?
It looks to me to be fair & factual and stays close to the press release.

No, against the firms 'working' on the wheel sets. How many years delay, before legal action is taken?

I think the wheel bearings were been made in South Africa as this firm was about the only firm who could make them in the world to fit on the size axle, so how are you going to sue a firm in this country if this is the reason the coaches aren't been finished, and if you do they will most likely never make any more.
