Didn't someone already name an amazing suggestion for a name on another thread somewhere? Or is my early onset dementia kicking up and it was in reference to something else...I was sure it was a one word with a military concentration that won wide applause... Someone must remember this.

The thought of this running the summer Harry Potter specials is tantalising!

Names... on account thay Gresley was born in Edinburgh aka Auld Reekie, Wee Reekie would be a hopeful for me. Maybe a bit too comedic for some...

With a nod to her birthplace, roughly, the English Peerage Earl of Doncaster has its equivalence in the Peerage of Scotland as Duke of Buccleuch and Queesberry, so there is a couple things to work with there. Earl of Darlington? Why not?!

I would suggest continuing the Bantam tradiotion, by naming 3403 “Bantam Crow”, or “Bantam Turkey”.

Presumably because the P2 and the V4 had a following but had design problems that current technology couldn't identify the causes of; the work undertaken on 60163 Tornado has been able to overcome the problems of the A1, is currently remedying the problems of the P2 and it is hoped that by applying the same technology to the V4 the A!SLT can prove that the P2 and V4 were not as poor a design as contemporary engineers would have it.

Nobody believes the V4 was a poor design I would hope. It was a good locomotive design. It was however made at the wrong time. The B1 that followed proves that to be case.

With apologies, if this has been asked on any other thread, but:

Did the front pony truck on either the original V3 or V4 require or receive similar modifications to those of the V2? Presumably, A1SLT will be carrying out the same computer modelling of the chassis previously conducted on the P2 design (assuming this hasn't already happened).

I think it was @S.A.C. Martin who had the bright idea of Harrier, or Bantam Harrier? (My apologies if it wasn't you Simon)

‘Capercaillie’ seems to fit the bill, I’m aware it’s been used before, just a nod to the West Highland connection.

They don't make 'em like Jake any more. The song in question was "Beware of the Bull", which I found on YouTube last year.

I did smile at that - Thompson actually described Raven as not knowing the difference between the a locomotive and a tender, mind...and that was of his father in law no less...!

He [Thompson] had a lot of respect for Gresley's work (I know it doesn't seem it on the face of things!). There was just one thing...

    ...but that's for another thread.

I think I am not alone in looking forward to seeing a Gresley V4 pounding the rails once again. And if possible, running on that beautiful bit of railway known as the Invergarry Railway one day...
