As they are by the old loco works then maybe one of the two locos that were built there might be a useful hook to get more local involvement and tug at the heart and purse strings.

So which "New Build" has the wrong boiler (too short) wrong smokebox (too long) ,cladding to disguise the artifice, wrong cylinders ( too small ) and lots of detail changes but is still a P2 ? Doh! given it away. What's more I never thought they would try and build one because of the long fixed wheelbase ! Much to my amazement it is happening ,its gorgeous and all the above decisions are proving correct and popular. I financially supported the A1 project from it's inception but had my doubts about this one. In the light of the above I would really like to see the 4709 project avoid any fantastically expensive one off boiler construction and do something similar by utilising the No.1 boiler I understand they are considering . With a No.7 size smokebox and cladding to disguise ,it would really look the part. My earlier WIBN posting alluded to this but then extended it to a tie up with the Thornbury Castle restoration . Probably a step too far but I keep looking at Lode Star and thinking "if only" !!

It's simply the next P2 in line, as was Tornado the next A1 in line, but in a similar way to Tornado, utilising better use of modern resources and materials. So yes, it would make sense for the Night Owl gang to do a similar thing if they want to, or stick to their existing rebuild plans if they want to do that. Their project; their rules :)

It's maybe not as one off as might be thought. The std7 could be described as a shortened King barrel on a Castle firebox.

Without getting into rivet counting Jim, do you think it might have been not much harder than that manufacturing wise?

I don't know enough about the subtleties of boiler making to comment much, but I do know tooling was a significant expense, and that is why these boilers have many aspects in common. What I don't know is how this translates into how one might make a new boiler today.

But bearing in mind the GWS has a King and Castles, and that presumably if they are to run indefinitely they will need new boilers eventually, would one of the folk who understands the technology be able to comment on whether investment in tooling to construct a Std 7 boiler would potentially also be useful when the time comes to construct Std 8 and or Std 12 boilers?

Yes, Thanks. The practicalities of the originals was more along the lines of what I was wondering about.

And a no.7 would be oh so right! ;)

One crucial consideration for 4709 is whether it will be allowed to run on the main line. If so, the size of boiler will have a significant influence on the number of coaches that it can pull and hence on the viability of running trips. If it is only ever going to potter up and down the demo lines at Didcot, and perhaps get taken to a few heritage lines, a no. 1 boiler disguised inside the larger cladding should be quite adequate.

C'mon you guys, build a new King;) The 10 wheelers ruled the rails longer than any class in the sunset of steam. The only American locomotive that is their equal is the New York Central Hudson not withstanding the Hudson was a Pacific type. I would have said build a Castle but there is enough of them already. There is no NYC Hudson in existence.....what a shame! As a second thought why not build us, on the other side of the pond, a Hudson seeing as we cannot do it over here for whatever reason most likely money and the lack of interest in heritage. Actually, why bother it would not likely be appreciated anyhowo_O

I would’ve suggested building Hawksworth’s never-built Cathedral Pacific. I had already made a fictional class bio already.

I do like the NYC Hudsons, an iconic design.
I am pretty sure though that they were a 'Hudson' type, not a 'Pacific' :)

Strewth! Aren't there enough guaging issues with the ones we've got? :Woot:

Why's no-one suggested revisiting Stanier's turbomotive*? The £5 million (or so) it'd take to recreate the beastie would be worth it just to see the utter befuddlement on the faces of anyone hearing it not chuffing along for the first time with 12 on .... and even before the design was finalised, there'd be enough potential there to keep an NP thread or two bowling along for a few years, before anyone suggests painting it BR blue!

*Aside from my (long overdue) lottery win being earmarked for a Brighton 'K', I know why I haven't!!

Well, if the new King project were to take, lets say, about 10 years to go from from Facebook to finished product, (just to be on the safe side....;)), then logic would dictate a suitable name might be "King Charles III".

Wait, whats that? Whoa! The whole project just got financed by one anonymous benefactor?!!

Hey, why not create a completely new design , the B.R. Exit class!:D

Never realised, but now very topical! I guess the contribution will be massive!
    First to the drawing table!;)

Don't need them. It's the will of the people to speed off as fast as possible without actually knowing quite where to. Nothing should get in the way of that objective.
