The Didcot Facebook page has the full statement from GWS.
    Kind regards

I know its extra work but dare we hope that the full profile fittings (cab, safety valve, chimney) can be restored for the heritage line tour once the revised draugthing has been tested? Either way it is going to look magnificent with the SVR's GWR set and likewise over the GWSR's viaduct on the way to Broadway!

Nope, as there is no road access and thus even to leave by road means a short mainline hop, she needs to be cut down to even leave DRC as Didcot is under the wires now.

I think this has been coming for a while.

You only have to look at the RAIB site and the number of sliding door/passenger down platform side incidents to know that clearances are going to get tighter and tighter.

As I recall the 47s were even more gauge limited (as opposed to weight limited) than the Kings so the prospects for 4709 look pretty poor.

Maybe it would be better to concentrate on easily removable cabs and fittings so that the locos can be readily shunted cold under the wires.

Marvellous, a decent (and gauge friendly) 8F chopped just so a facsimilie can potter up and down the Didcot demo for 10 years before doubtless being stuffed.
WRT 6023, are there general geographic areas where it may fit better, albeit off home territory?

The 8F has nothing to do with the 47xx????

WRT to the King, the piece in SR (which is more vague that the GWS statement although I suspect its publication has led to the GWS statement) seems to suggest that GWS are confident that she could get as far as Newton Abbot so far? How much would it cost to borrow the 6024 cylinder pattern, cast and machine new cylinders as the cost tends to be in the pattern??

For those in the know, how does a Saint compare with say a Hall?

Yes, apologies, I was mixing the mongrels up. The 8F is destroyed for the "Hawksworth" County project. Is that likely to have greater route availability?
Off topic and galloping a hobby horse, I noticed the national arboretum has a memorial monument in the form of an 8F. When the RBL has rejected the Patriot as an official memorial, how sad an actual war relic has been destroyed.

Yes, well, nobody seemed to want said 8F until it was really too late, I'm afraid. The time to preserve it was before the GWS had their chance to use what they wanted. Sad but true.

As I have commented before, would it not be cheaper to make the trains a little wider using step plates below the doors rather than moving all the track to bring it closer to the platforms

Surely there must be another thread to moan about an 8F that nobody wanted being turned into something folk did want?

Anyway, seems like a sensible decision now given how little time is left on the boiler ticket, by the time all the mainline stuff was sorted out (assuming it can be eventually) it would probably be due a re-tube anyway. And I can't say I'm too disappointed about the revised plans for the middle of this year either... :D :D :D (If only we still had a blood and custard rake)

I imagine the track is mostly only moved when its being moved anyway.

Mr H has 6024, why would he need another for his trainset?
