And now we can also start speculating which loco Mr Bunch might buy instead!

i would not think so, but given his past involvement with 34067, Would he be tempted to put the money into restoring 34073, but if he was serious about owning another loco, i would expect a shared ownership deal so i'm wondering, would he buy into 35009 if Ian Riley were to decide he needs to add his own 8p To his operational list?

that is in part why i suspect any new loco he has an interest in will not be owned out right by him, and there are very very few ready to run loco's up for sale , just out of interest if he sold Bodmin to David Smith, and he no longer has a half share in Tangmere so he must have more than enough to buy any engine , and overhaul it but as ever with John Bunch, nothing is ever clear, the N class is being overhauled from the Swanage Railways coffers . so he's not having to fund that,

it's a bit bizarre that he owns three locos and has pledged them to Swanage and is looking for another. I assume that the railway he plans on locating a future purchase on is not the Swanage as he could go there and play with the locos he already has.

Not necessarily. The moguls are on a long lease, and effectively the Swanage Railway ‘owns’ them for 25 years, and has complete control over them.

If he wants another loco to play with as he sees fit, there is no reason he couldn’t base it at Swanage.

41312 is a class 2, in working order, and Swanage would definitely say yes if Mr Bunch wanted to base it there. If only it were for sale!

there's very little to stop him playing with them at no cost at Swanage is my point. No need for him to buy another to do that

But he could also join the Bluebell, Severn Valley etc etc as a volunteer and play with their locos at no cost- effectively the same thing.

However he seems to want to own a loco that he has complete control over. It might not go to Swanage, but I see no reason to rule it out at the moment.

hardly the same as it being your own loco I imagine and having the fun of taking it around the country when it suits you

But that’s exactly the point. The Moguls effectively aren’t his locos at the moment and he can’t take them round the country when it suits him. However if he bought another loco he could do this - whether or not it was based at Swanage.

It’s all very amusing this thread, but just for the avoidance of doubt:

    1) There are two parties in any loco hire - the fact that you own a loco doesn’t automatically mean you can base it anywhere: the host railway has to have an operational need. While I suspect that an owner of a class 2 - 4 loco would probably have several possibilities, it doesn’t automatically mean they can just choose any railway, rock up and say “I’d like to run my loco please”.

    2) Responsible owners, and responsible operators, don’t “play” with locomotives - at least not once they get bigger than about 7mm/ft.

And says a smaller engine - so those 2 factors would appear to rule out a Bulleid.

I dont think anyone has suggested you can just take a loco to any old railway without their permission?

I think the ‘play with’ derives bit from John Bunch’s own comments about having some fun with his new loco.

Ultimately though isn’t that what we are all doing? Playing with a big train set!
