Angel Trains will be preserving at least one of these units as they are obliged to do so, as per Heritage Railway magazine

Obliged to do so by whom?

The only body that has the power to 'make' owners of railway equipment preserve equipment is the Science Museum Group who took on the duties of the 'Railway Heritage Committee' that was abolished in the Cameron Governments 'Bonfire of useless Quangos'

As far as I know the only ex PEP inspired EMU officially selected by the RHC / SM due for preservation is a class 313.

As they are Scottish based units could it perhaps be a Scottish govt decision to preserve one?

It could be. Museums are a devolved matter, although I'm not sure that they have the same powers as the Science Museum group do by virtue of the latter taking on the RHC role as regards preserving railway equipment k wide.

It is the version of the 4-PEP* design used on Glasgow inner suburban routes. It is basically teh same as class 313 (GN suburban/North London Line), 315 (GE Suburban), 507 & 508 (Merseyside electrics). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_314.

    * - scurrilously referred to as "Pack 'em in Perpendicularly", officially "Prototype Electro-Pneumatic".

The Scottish Government does not have these powers
