If you're running a suitable browser (e.g. Chrome or Firefox) just install the "Privacy Badger" addon, it blocks most tracking and is produced by a wrll-respected non-commercial organization (the EFF, Electronic Frontier Foundation). Note that it's not a complex addon - it does have various options but you don't need to use them, the defaults work just fine.

Ken, many thanks for the support which is much appreciated. We are picking up the pieces and I am determined that we all pull together. Like you, I am deeply frustrated that some individuals like to issue howls of anguish whatever we do.
The board is in a great position at the moment. We are developing the new corporate plan for consultation and have some great things in store.

The way FB works is they download all the addresses from your email client address book and then suggest other FB people which "you may know" because they match their email addresses to your address book.
They do not ask... it is an insidious practice. Glad you are happy with that.

It's a while since I joined, but I think Facebook do ask before accessing your address book, one of the things they suggest when you set up an account is that you tell them your e-mail address and e-mail service so they can help you find your friends. The dialog box has the usual clients, hotmail, outlook, yahoo etc and another box for others. I can't disprove that Facebook has secretly stolen my address book but if they have they are making a very poor attempt at offering me 'friends' based on that list. ;).
My address book is held on my local PC and it would be quite a trick for Facebook to find it based only on the e-mail address I gave them.

I don’t think they need to steal your address book to recommend friends - they can do it just from information they hold about your usage. For example, if you are friends with X and X is also friends with Y, it’s at least a fair bet that Y is a potential friend for you, so they will recommend. Likewise with groups - I “follow” the Bluebell and IoWSR pages, so I get MHR suggested (quite logical - similar subject and geographic location) but not, say, Dean Forest. Multiply that with all your interactions and they don’t need to go round surreptiously stealing your address book.

I think that's right. All, the recommendations I get can be traced back to friends of friends or groups/pages that I follow.

You sound very certain about this, but how would FB get into my Gmail account? (I get an alert even if I have accessed it from a different from normal PC or phone).

If what you say is true, then it certainly does not work. I have been with FB for 8 years and have never been offered anyone on my Gmail contacts as "someone I might know".

Same here, none on my email list have come up in the last 8 years. I also frequently check my security settings on fb, that is better done on a pc or laptop than phone or tablet, only twice have I had to re-set one of the privacy options. I have a second account on there that is shut down so tight nobody sees anything at all, completely blank as such.

Good news indeed, Gary, and lucky, lucky WSR. Your crews have something to look forward to. I know Gary will have fond memories of 4930 "Hagley Hall," as I do. This was one of the nicest engines I have ever had the pleasure of working on. 4936 will be the same, especially after Tyseley have sorted it. I fired 7029 Clun Castle on the SVR many years ago and loved it. I thought then, "I really get what all the hype is about." So, yeah, enjoy, you lucky buggers!

Just out of interest, what was the route classification for Taunton to Minehead? A "Castle" comes in category red I believe.
