No, there was a lot of measurements involved prior to any decisions.

I know this will have me written off as a traditionalist pedant but it grates when I see 71000 referred to as "he". Locomotives have always been feminine, "she"! I also detest Cromwell being referred to as "Ollie". Dignity is an endangered concept.

Provided that the group isn't being silly with privacy settings its not particularly hard to extract Facebook posts to display on a web page, so if your regular newsmonger can only manage face book a competent web designer can still ensure that posts made on facebook appear on the proper web site. If anyone's interested I can give them some starting points.

While thinking of the no.71000 "Duke of Gloucester", does anyone know what the highest recorded power output of this locomotive is?

    Hello Knut
The BR test report gives 2100 DBHP at 40 mph and 1400 at 90 mph.
Before rebirth/tune up of the Duke the norwegian Dovregubben 2-8-4 made 2600 hp for same mass and less coal.
If You give me Your e-mail I can forward a copy of test repport.
Do You have the German test of the Dovregubben 1940?

Thanks a lot for this information!:) That`s really impressive, about 3200 IHP.

Might these rcordings be from this remarkable run?

Did you never do Rheine - Emden behind a 012, or the Saalfeld loop: - D504 to Halle - P7337 to Leipzig and E805 back to Sallfeld behind an oil-fired 01.5? Fantastic performance!
Incidentally, the 01.5 oil were rated 2500HP, against the 2000HP of the coal-fired version.

Anybody got updates on 71000s overhaul please?

Their website seems to have gone rather quiet on the update front lately.
