Thanks Andy. I took a look at your video, the power application was relentless you kept thinking they must ease up at some point - but they didn't. As for the speed thro' Penrith I couldn't put a number on it but on the "old scale" of fast, v fast and f fast it's got to be up there.
    Regards

Thanks Peter, I'd be pleased for you to call me Oswald, better than some of the other things I've answered to over the years. I've a few more trips already booked so expect more of the usual nonsense.

Good to meet you, no doubt we'll come across each other again. It was a good trip, I think that Galatea gave all that there was with 11 coaches. Sorry about the bacon butty, I had one at the West Cornwall Pasty Co which was good and Andy said that he had a good one at Greggs (not in the station).

With a Yorkshire man having a poor bacon butty in Lancashire. I can give you the flip side a Lancashire man having an excellent one in Yorkshire. Last autumn Mrs W and I were in Thirsk at lunchtime and went into a café in the market square, York's of Thirsk where we each had a very tasty and enjoyable bacon butty. Whilst paying I complimented the proprietor, a bluff middle-aged man on the excellent quality of the bacon. Normally a response would be, "Thanks, glad you enjoyed it" or perhaps, "We get it from a farm just outside town" or some such like. "Aye, an' plenty on it!" was the response delivered in a strong Yorkshire accent, no smile, no nothing - such charm - good butty though.

That is probably fair comment and significant credit due to the crews in the challenging conditions over a testing route.

    That made me smile Oswald.
The odd tasting thing I had was from upper ? crust, I cant picture where the WCPCo is, but thank you I must remember for next time although my next 4 bookings are not from Preston.
Well done also on finding the one Yorkshireman who keeps the fallacy going that we are a bit tight ovver ere (lol)

Another excellent report, as always. It was interesting to compare the 2 runs up Shap, one with a start of 36 at Grayrigg, the other from a stand at Grayrigg but with a full boiler and prepared fire - nothing between them at the summit in terms of speed.

Continuing the comparison theme, I did a couple of similar runs in August 2015 (45699 with 11 coaches). These runs had the benefit of dry rails and no steam heating requirement - they were very similar to the two recorded, again suggesting that this is the limit for 45699 + 11. I revisited the GPX files and extracted the data that best matches your measurement points (a little minor interpolation was required - sorry missus!). I have also added a similar, but exceptional run, with 46115 + 13 (almost at the end of its ticket).

One final comment, I must tip my proverbial cap to you; mixed grill, 2 pints and an ice cream - a "legend in your own lunchtime".

Great logs from all. Is any comparative data of Black 5 performance with similar load for the return route availabe perhaps, out of interest?

Thank you kind sir. I tend to agree the runs show Galatea pretty much on the limit. To complete your excellent table, the Appleby-Ais Gill summit Board timing was 30m 43s. I wonder if Saturday will hold any surprises for us??

I'll be on that - coach C. RTT indicates we should pass each other by the signal box at Howe & Co Sidings about 10 minutes south of Carlisle, so I'll be sure to keep an eye out.
