It was the photographers who were going to fund and do the repaints, among the number were a few professional painters who have done locomotives before

I seem to recall that Tyseley accepted a similar offer for Kolhapur and were not impressed by the final paint finish. Maybe the PELS declined in the light of that?

One of the factors in it not happening was due to the constitution of the society having in writing that the engine carries LMS livery . All of the sums were done and business case prepared ( I know as I was involved)

Why should they confirm or deny anything? as has been said countless times before, any information will be announced as and when they see fit, not before and certainly not at your request.

This statement appears regularly, but it is puzzling as since 1976, the owning/members body has been a company, not a society (albeit it has "Society" in its name"). The company's "constitution" is its memorandum and articles of association, which can be viewed on line, and on the face of it do not contain any such strictures about colour of the loco. Can you advise where this requirement is stated?

What Trust? The loco’s ownership has not changed, to the best of my knowledge. The society is set up as a private company - limited by guarantee (i.e. owned by the society members, no shareholders). It is not a registered charity.

So it appears that since my last comment about 30 posts ago on the logic of possibly 10A carrying out some of the work on 6201, there's been a whole load of froth (can't think of a better word) about the society/company/constitution plus a little unpleasantness. I just don't get it.

Let's take it as a 'given' that everyone would like to see 6201 in action again. It may not be able to go everywhere because of its size and weight but it is strong enough and fast enough to be very useful on the ML with a decent sized train. It also has air brakes. Any organisation or engineering set up that can help with that aim must surely be a 'good news' story - rumour or not.

Assuming that the next ten years will continue to see steam on the main line in some form, there just has to be an understanding of what is possible. For major locomotive work then is it not logical that big engineering set ups will increasingly feature as contractors for some of the work, even more so than now? It is around these organisations that all the necessary skills will need to be nurtured and develop for the next generation of people to carry out major overhauls. Can I mention in passing that, for example, the recent overhaul of Clan Line involved an outsourcing of some work to LNWR Crewe to a scale not seen before.

So if there is an arrangement with Carnforth then so much the better. It is, after all, places like this, plus Riley & Sons, Tyseley, LNWR Crewe.... (you know the list) that are the future, I suggest.

There's a Carnforth-Butterley movement in RTT for today - see this thread. Related, or a red herring? Intriguing!

Wise words indeed and the contrast between the management of the two former Hereford stablemates could not be more stark. If folk are peturbed in some way by the prospect of a Carnforth investment in 6201 and ceding of PELS control, the reason it has perhaps come to this lies in the long term prudence of the operating body. MNLPS have managed very effectively whereas PELS ...... less so?

Can we be sure in either case? PELS may or may not have problems. But there does seem an issue with where work can be done and how it can be paid for. MNLPS did effectively restrict the Clan Line to the Belmonds prior to the overhaul. Now the loco is more extensively used. On the one hand that will create much needed revenue but on the other hand, the repair bill will likely rise. Will we see a consolidation of loco ownership and a move away from single loco trusts/companies? Or worse still, like Mr Cameron's stable, they will get stuffed and mounted?

i would say its more to do with ,how each group is run, MNLPS focus is on the engine, and on ensuring it is properly looked after, and that when it runs it is properly operated , The PELS on the other hand seems to be more about the personalities at the top, the company it seems is a family run concern, with the top positions it would appear members of the same family so the question will arise, what is the guiding princible the engine, or maintaining what is in effect control of the engine? are decisions being made on personal view points, rather than on whats best for the engine ? it has been said elsewhere that the shareholders may have control, but no power, meaning power is not vested in the membership,
My point of view is that societies will where they cant run things effectivly will be under real pressure The MNLPS are very careful with how they operate their engine, they invest in it to ensure that they do have a fund for future overhauls, even then, they will still have unforseen expenditure, and the future will be in some kind of shared ownership , If David Smith has reached a deal that will see 6201 back on the mainline, rather than as a static exhibit somewhere thats got to be a better outcome, a cold dead engine cant earn money .

Don't care about politics, what is needed is another class 8 performer on the mainline....

SNG seems to do ok for funding overhauls, but then, they had regular income from the NYMR and main-line running. Either way, as said by 26D and Big Al, any deal that may be done between PELS and 10A can only benefit the locomotive. She is perfect for Shap and Ais Gill. We'll just have to wait and see I guess!

I'm also wondering, if Lizzie is to be restored to health and maintained at Carnforth, would her volunteers be allowed access to the site to do some of the work? If so, I'd love to help out there and partially re-live those halcyon days as a Steamtown volunteer!

Is this not the case already, for example with the K1 and NELPG?

I understand NELPG volunteers work on 62005 at 10A during winter months when not on Jacobite duties. What was the arrangement for 46233 at Carnforth?

Think we posted at the same time, how dissimilar would this be to the 46233 arrangements of the last few years or would it be CRRES doing everything themselves?
