Sadly much reduced in recent times, as its a brilliant trip, but 2017 saw 2 days the Fri/Sat of the steam gala, expect the same this year, assuming Glaisdale points have or are repaired.

One of the problems is that the current Northern T/T doesn't really allow sufficient time. It can be achieved if the train is top'n'tailed but only allows five minutes at Battersby. Running to Battersby also screws the normal timetable, which is one reason why it only happens on special event days. It also runs into a problem with competence. Because there are so few trains, it doesn't give much opportunity for crews to maintain route knowledge, which has the knock-on effect of meaning few people can crew the trains that do run and, if they are not available, the trains can't run.

Merely curious, but what is the crew training sitution with Whitby to Grosmont? I presume a limited number of crew are passed for operating the line, and all the others can only work Grosmont to Pickering.

Crews generally start out on the NYMR. Cleaners rostered with crews on what are known as Improvement turns work with the crew for the day, including going to Whitby if that is part of the diagram. They will generally fire under instruction although they don't do anything whilst on the EVL as crew training is not generally undertaken on this line (other than route learning.). Once passed out as a fireman, they will have initial turns on NYMR only diagrams. Once experienced, they will do twelve (or more) route learning trips to Whitby before having a separate assessment for route knowledge (operation of ground frames, knowledge of user worked crossings, etc). A similar arrangement applies to newly appointed drivers, who will initially be rostered to NYMR only turns as they gain experience. The preferred arrangement is that footplate crews become passed for going to Whitby as part of their progression but it is not a mandatory requirement and we have one or two who don't sign the road to Whitby out of personal preference. There is a smaller link with route knowledge on the EVL to Battersby. It has to be small as there are limited opportunities to maintain route knowledge. There is no distinction in the written exams undertaken so all crews are expected to have an appropriate knowledge of the RSSB rulebook, as well as the NYMR rulebook. EVL crews have to have medical that includes an ECG.

How serious is the flood issue? If real, hopefully the railway will plan to be flooded - e.g. have plans to temporarily evacuate the rolling stock to higher ground if a flood threatens, install non-moveable gear on the tallest pedestals practical, etc, etc.

Along with Pickering, the railway in this area has flooded in the past, the main problems being the electrical kit, such as point motors. However, the Pickering flood defence scheme is now in operation so should prevent routine flooding. It remains to be tested under extreme conditions, though.

Carriage stable is really a misnomer. It is better described as a carriage barn. There is considerable concern about the open sided design of the building in some quarters (me included) as it provides no defence against vandal and other attacks.

Presumably open sides don't necessarily mean open access? Many barns have open (well ventilated) sides but are boarded or fenced in ways which prevent access.

One might hope that advice is being taken from others such as SVR about the best design for a carriage shed which includes consideration of issues such as fire risk and air/temperature changes as condensation is often a major factor in corrosion but free air circulation greatly increases the risks of loss in any fire.

I think 'barn' is pushing it too. It's little more than a gigantic car port.

Inevitably nature will find a way - and when it does overcome human attempts to restrain it, inevitably the results will be even worse!
After the damage to the teak set, I can definitely agree that this is crucial. A whole bunch of carriages gathered together - it's just like putting out a lure to a certain mentality!

Speaking of the damage to the teak set, what ever happened to the people who did that? IIRC, they were identified? Or am I mis-remembering?

Photos of the newly outshopped 1264 are now up on the Grosmont MPD Facebook page. She looks absolutely stunning.

Indeed 1264 looks stunning in L.N.E.R. colours. The touch I really like is that the Thompson B1 Society have based 1264 at "Whitby" as shown on the buffer beam:).

Bumping this one. Tomorrow evening, 8.00pm on Channel 5. According to those who have seen the preview, it is good. However, a word to any pedants, the continuity of trains is quite wanting so if a scene starts with a Black 5 leaving Grosmont for Pickering and then becomes a Standard 4 entering Whitby please don't post about it; accept it for what it is, a good fly on the wall documentary aimed at Joe Public.
And before anyone asks, I was nowhere near the Railway during filming!
On a different topic, this weekends special services with Tornado have had to be cancelled due to the weather conditions on the Moors. Grosmont is more or less inaccessible. Normal service is hoped to be resumed on Tuesday.

Just a quickie to say I thought 'The Yorkshire Steam Railway' was ok, nothing more than that, maybe a bit contrived? I'm no no civil engineer but if the concerns about 46100 fitting under the bridge at Goathland were serious then surely it wouldn't have been allowed to proceed under it the way it did? As I say I thought it was ok but I did think it portrayed the NYMR was flying by the seat of its pants at times. We all know things don't exactly go to plan, but I thought it was a bit over egged, at certain points.

You are probably right in some respects but, don't forget, it is entertainment for the masses. A well oiled machine isn't going to provide much interest. All locos visiting the NYMR for the first time are subject to a gauging run, even though nothing untoward is expected. Piglet was highlighting the known pinch points of the bridge at Goathland and the platform at Pickering. There was concern about water on 46100 for reasons I won't go into as I'm not party to all the facts but the loco was 'using' a lot of water. The other 'incidents' were all real if perhaps a little dramatised but managing such problems is the name of the game and that is exactly what happened.

Not the NYMR's fault, but the lack of continuity in the sequences was excruciating at times and yes, the "dramas" looked very contrived.
It won't be remembered as one of the finest TV programmes , but if it brings in a few more visitors then it's "job done".

[IMG] it is really interesting whenever a program is on TV about railways how high and mighty railway enthusiasts get picking holes in every aspect , bleating about inaccurancies etc. I can't help but feel but it just confirms all the stereotypes enthusiasts get . Sorry all you are not the target audience. Joe public are and as an advert for a visit to the NYMR is becomes priceless free advertising . Don't like what you are seeing there are hundreds of other channels to watch . Statement attached from the production company on the continuity
