Hi I asked a question on this forum a few weeks ago about Deltic and will it ever run again and someone came back and said no because some engine parts missing is this true Anthony Coulls and would you consider replacing the missing parts.

    Thanks

And what would be the point? Its much more important conserved as it is, there is no lack of operational and under-overhaul deltics after all. Restoring something for the hell of it is not a good use of museum money.

As far as I remmeber, apart from one or two 'engineering' mods made when it was removed from the Science Museum, Deltic is in exactly the condition in which English Electric handed it over in the 1960s. We often go on about 'original' condition, and Deltic is a prime piece of evidence in defining what 'original' might mean. To get it running would mean ripping through all that original EE material and replacing it with new. I would be very surprised if the NRM is considering doing anything with Deltic other than looking after it in the way it does now.

](*,) 4472 is the most famous loco in the world, which will be in massive demand when back on the mainline. Deltic isnt world famous, and with numerous working examples, would have little work (as well as the issues raised by anthony in the post above).

    Simple

Like it or lump it, we have committed to running 4472, it's what we collected it for and what the public expect. And regardless of livery, I bet that most on here would rather see it running than not.

I recall asking the museum curator in 1983 about getting the deltic running again, he told me when english electric handed over the locomotive in 1963 the engines were stripped inside, there are no pistons or crankshafts, but with some modification to the engine mounts engines from the proguction deltics would fit,in 1983 i seen all the engines removed from the deltics when they were withdrawn but nobody bought any engines to fit into the prototype deltic, although the dps did buy one or two, the deltic prototype is worth getting running as it was world famous when it was built.there is no reason why the prototype deltic could not be made to run now but who will loan just one engine as im sure it will run on just one engine as the deltics were designed to run on one or both engines, i have lots of film showing the deltic prototype engine being changed and its quiet easy if you have the lifting gear,i might put this on a dvd, but with the lack of interest in deltics now i dont think its a viable thing to do. thanks

I don't think that's quite correct, Ben from Vintage Trains was asking for suggestions for tours, I was surprised with how many folks asked for Martin Walkers 55022 to be used.
