Reported elsewhere due to TPWS fault, this tour will now have a diesel pilot

Just passed the train as it was waiting south of Doncaster station. 66014 attached to the front.

That's a massive 130 extra tons on a train that I suspect is already pretty long. Can't help but think that today will be nothing like it was originally planned to be even with Tornado's pulling/pushing power.

And just seen it depart Leeds. As predicted diesel doing the majority of the work.

Must be more than a TPWS issue for Tornado not to be doing all the work. Nothing unusual for the big engine to be pulling 13+ a dead diesel.

Excuse my ignorance but will this mean diesel pilot for whole journey or just to Carlisle?

It will have to pilot Tornado all the way, as her braking system is non-compliant for NR.

Thanks Sheff, a nice little job on the list for fettling at Grosmont. I guess she will have to be piloted all the way there then.
Will still have a trip to Tyne Yard later.

From our man on the hill - dragged past Garsdale, no apparent action from Tornado :(

As far as operation of the train is concerned I recall that there is a difference between loco with diesel inside compared to diesel with loco inside. Today's arrangement means that the diesel will have done the work, I think.

All seems hard to explain. Tornado failed the FTR with a defective TPWS unit. From the comments of linesiders and watching the HIR Webcam, you've got to ask why Tornado is there; and what it's status on the train is.

Doesn't it have to get to Tyne Yard somehow so this is the easiest way?

Due at NYMR soon, acts as a perfect (in some quarters) positioning run really.

Was 60163 still suppling steam heat to the train?

Thanks for that, Tyne Yard a sensible place to swap, out of the way, but suppose it now needs a tow to NYMR, if TPWS is up the spout.

There were some disappointed watchers at Stocksfield today, some of the kids seemed to think venturing out with granddad to see something that wasn't what they were expecting was something of a very cold waste of time ...
The distant view of an on-coming diesel with smoke / steam being emitted caused some consternation !

Thought I would give the northbound WCME a miss and concentrate on 'Tornado' passing the site of the old Garsdale troughs, lovely sunny conditions, the wind although cold was in the right direction so looking forward to event, then comes the phone call from Simon Kerry there's a shed on the front, the language was the same colour as the sky grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
