I wonder why close coupled cisterns were chosen?

I'd have expected a high level cistern and a chain pull, with a satisfying deluge of water racing round the bowl when flushed :)

I guess it's another decision taken before greater accuracy was insisted on.

No, it was a question of what the walls would bear. With a very late improvement in the heritage view, we were limited by decisions taken a long time ago.

You mean your walls aren't strong enough to bear a toilet cistern? What are they made of???

The GW would not have done it that way, would they?;);)

Its probably got more to do with the position of that window, which is exactly where a high level cistern would need to be.
    Bummer.

Very apt comment when discussing toilets;).

There are many legacy issues foisted upon us when we were allowed to make the toilets more heritage in style, dating back right to the casting of the slab for the building. By that time it had already been decided that there would be modern wall mounted urinals, and not the slab or 'niagara' type that would have been in period.

Too late now to improve the heritage appearance of the Broadway toilets, but how accurate is the GWR style of those installed at Birmingham Moor Street when that was reopened? It certainly looks impressive, although the last time I was there a decade of footfall was taking its toll.

The webcam showed another run of the 73 yesterday presumably with a ballast drop and today the tamper is back between the platforms.. Looking so good now.

What was done this weekend, if I may enquire. (For some reason, no update was posted.) Thanks!

Very little I'd imagine given the very cold temperatures and snow (although Broadway may have escaped the latter thus far). Things not looking at all helpful weather-wise for at least the next few days. Typical!

This kind of weather is very much not conducive to re-opening stations in time for Easter! I know a certain C+W manager who will be cursing too with lots still to get through, it's all very well having heated workshops but if volunteers are snowed in it's not much use!

If it's any consolation, the last couple of months of digging out Imberhorne cutting in the winter of 2012/13 was pretty foul, and the opening weekend to East Grinstead was run off in a blizzard!

I remember seeing the pictures of East Grinstead opening, never occurred to me digging out Imberhorne cutting would have been happening in the preceding winter!

  17. Don't worry, nowadays cold snaps like these only ever last for a few days. Within a few short days the Great British Public will have forgotten all about it as they all go back to moaning that it's 'always raining'.

With the strong drying winds of late the soil in these parts is very dry. At last any snow will melt and give some wellcome moisture to the ground! :D

Dang, I was there today and wondered myself but forgot to ask. I have some pictures but might save them for a B&S blog (they also work on site now)
Structurally the Broadway blog works different to the Extension blog, as theirs has a number of contributors and on top of that an editor, so not all the text always makes it to the final product. If no one among the contributors is there (and not everyone works every day) then you can easily get a gap. This actually increases the viewing figures, as people keep clicking to see if there is a post a last.

The levelling of the platforms is almost complete; they still have to put a binding layer on they said today. The trench for the granite kerbs was further dug out today, electrical contractors were wiring up the dreaded 1970s BR location cupboards along the platform, the plumber was putting up the beige dividers, and finally the holes in the floor for the crowd barrier posts were drilled today.

Wanna know what Broadway looked like this afternoon?
Here is a sneak preview from the extension blog:
