NRM York Regeneration

The aim of the NRM should be to educate the next generation, many of whom will have no knowledge of what the birth of railways meant, but can it do this whilst under the control of an london facing organisation? to me this is part of the problem, ideally the NRM should be its own stand alone group, comprising the outstation,and possibly steam and should have its own budget , its own staff who are picked from an engineering, as well as conservation background, the workshop should be under either someone like Ian Riley but part of the deal should be that there should be at least one york based mainline engine, i would have no problem if say part of the package was that it was on a one in, one out, for instance , Run Scotsman, but the funding is used to say restore 6229, so when Scotsmans ticket expires, 6229 returns to the mainline, When that ones up, Mallard returns, aided with appeals etc,ensuring there is an overlap so at some stage you could see Scotsman visit preserved railways, whilst 6229 flys the flag for the NRM .

 

To be fair, the warbirds rebuilds are done by private companies and not the IWM. I can’t think of a single IWM aircraft that is airworthy.

Cannot agree with the first paragraph. 100 tons of stuffed and mounted machinery does nothing to convey the spectacle of a steam locomotive at speed. As for making them Trigger's broom, they already are. As you see Mallard today it's on its 9th boiler and I think 4th tender. It almost certainly isn't standing on all the wheels it was built with either.

 

As long as it was battered and had a side dish of chips and mushy peas you mean of course , the 92 sqn chippy , Actually ian, a few name plates, " cooked in a discarded oil bath" i can't see where you would go wrong, plus it goes towards 34081 it adds to the food availible at York ,

 

But it is as it was when it was last restored the same for most objects. I'm not really sure what your point is here. No object is going to be as it originally. There is obviously going to be a huge debate about conservation vs restoration but that is another story for another day. I am sure that some would say that more would be lost by say restoring Coppernob or Aerolite than would be gained.

My point is that it would be perfectly valid for someone at NRM to say 'restoring locomotives to working order is not our job, the national collection is not a working collection but a collection of historically significant objects reflecting the development of the railways.' If you want to see a working A4 go and see Bittern, Union of South Africa etc, if you want locos working then go to Pickering, Bury, Leicester, Bridgenorth, Porthmadog, Minehead, etc etc

 

Look at what has happened to the National Media Museum in Bradford, now the National Science and Media Museum. No more film festivals, the transfer of an internationally important photographic archive to London, the closure of the television historic programme viewing facility but the installation of Wonderlab a playground for children with very little educational value.

 

Thinking about the National Media Museum, you wonder how much of this race to the bottom is a response to the cuts in museum funding by the government and so the need to bring em in, pile em high is what drives every decision now.

Having a read through some of the gubbins and spiel about the regeneration in the press seems to reveal there will be a new "Prep Bay" area set aside for refuelining and small scale maintenance/turnaround of steam engines. From Heritage Rail:

Visitors will also enjoy improved access onto locomotives and will benefit from views over the Prep Bay, where they will see visiting engines being maintained and fuelled.
