I am guessing that shop and tea room are firmly shut before returning passengers, perhaps keen for something to drink or eat before a journey or having not fancied carrying a shop purchase around with them all day, planning to buy on their return, have any chance of getting anywhere near them.

Peak Rail made an excellent entry in 'best stopping people spending their money' on Saturday - Tea Room door open as the train came in but firmly locked shut by the time anyone could get anywhere near, and shop also locked up despite a sign on the platform saying it could be accessed via the booking hall.

Up to a point - the gents at Rothley are decidedly "heritage" and I have no problem in using them. BL, sadly, neither has the justification of "heritage" nor modern comfort.

We have both kinds of toilet at Ropley and Alresford (I can scarcely believe I am writing this though :)) In the station buildings there are "heritage loos" for the experience of how it was "back in the day", and elsewhere new toilets for when the customer doesnt care to know "how it was..." Best of both worlds?

Judging by the webcams there are opportunities for hardy souls to take next year's WSR Christmas card photographs................

Where I am, it is currently 55F with 6"-7" of snow & gales expected for the weekend - typical for New England. "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute".

I assume some track maintenance volunteers might appreciate some indoor work at times .

Back in 1977 the WSR ran an emergency train service to BL when Minehead was cut off by snow.

Since then other lines including the Leadenhills & Wanlockhead and Tallylyn have run trains to deal with emergencies or road closures, but does the WSR or any other lines have any formal plans to help out in an emergency or form part of local emergency plans?

As you say the building is kept in generally good repair and it's not particularly attractive , but it does serve it's purpose . Would it be right to spend money there or on something more needy ?

  10. No harm in trotting out this 1978 tale again, I suppose?

I imagine the WSR will be watching the snow pitching and blowing around this evening...what happens next is anyone's guess.

The important thing is that first impressions are very important. You never get another chance. We are not talking of very much money for materials and the labour would bve from volunteers. How about crowd funding it Robin?

...... or would rather not be reminded "how it was"! :D

(I'm sure the MHR don't allow certain aspects to 'become too faithfully recreated'!)

    It's a Council bog!
I don't know what folks expectations really are, but it is what it is. You can't make a silk purse out of it. It's not GWR & if it were, it wouldn't have a roof (sorry, Dunster, nothing personal).
There's no question it could be cosmetically improved - it all comes down to priorities & resources, usually money & labour. If & when it becomes WSR property, then maybe PDG can assess the need for changes & put it somewhere on the long list of stuff to be addressed.

It would still need the WSR PLC to get permission.

Ok then may I suggest that you propose to the PLC that you would like to organise a working party to improve the situation at BL..

AIUI the work is all in hand subject to permission. Due to my disabilities I am unable to do more, but I would happily contribute cash to the project.
