Thought it was good entertainment and showed the railway and staff in a good light. A variety of age groups and a mix of paid staff and volunteers interviewed all clearly enjoying what they do. Will be tuning in next week.

    Regards

    Hmmm.....
Don't think anyone is "bleating" or being "high and mighty" - merely making an observation. The lack of continuity is now explained - thanks for attached statement.
As I said, if it brings in a few more passengers for the NYMR, then all well and good.

It should be remembered that the same issues of accuracy, drama and continuity arise for all television programmes (and other media). In a railway programme those who know about railways will notice these issues. They might not know much about, for example, manners in the 19th century and be unaware of the egregious errors in many adaptions of Jane Eyre. However, the problem becomes very serious when we watch news and current affairs programmes!

The programme conformed to the currently fashionable approach of pretending that total disaster was being narrowly avoided at all times.
And too much time was devoted to shots inside various motor-cars, totally irrelevant in a railway programme. Very disappointing IMHO.
But probably good publicity for the railway.

Yes many of us in the Nat Pres forum know the N.Y.M.R. to a greater or lesser degree as members/supporters of the Moors or visitors. Thing is this program is aimed at the greater public, of whom most will have the "Harry Potter" level of interest and may want to combine a holiday/visit to the Beach [or a Dracula tour of Whitby] with a ride on a "Steam Train"...... So yes from our point of view these sort of programs can be toe curling and contrived. But those feelings don't pay the bills, the visiting public pick up I would suggest a good 95-99%+/- of the said bills.

Whilst some of the "drama" was obviously contrived (as is the norm for this type of programme), I think there were underlying indications of the willingness among the shed staff to go the extra mile in order to keep the show going - the boilersmith working in the firebox of an obviously still hot boiler to replace the weeping fusible plug, for example.

I was a bit surprised that there were any gauging concerns, given the variety of locos that have previously worked over the line without issues, and without any significant relaying in the Goathland station area but I suppose the formalities have to be observed. I'd have been more worried about Greenend Bridge!

Yes, particularly that scene where the heroine uses her iPhone 6 to call the doctor - obviously should have been something like a Nokia 3310 back in those days.;)

My wife's no enthusiast, but in her opinion it made the NYMR look rather shambolic and it would put her off visiting if she didn't have first hand experience.

As I said in my original post I thought it made the NYMR look like it was flying by the seat of its pants, I'm rather surprised I haven't had a message from my good lady's father saying the same sort of thing.

Agreed. A lot of nice photography, and if it gets a few more bums on seats, then that is great for all of us. The future of preserved railways should never be taken for granted; as the GM (or maybe someone else) said, the NYMR needs to get £7M a year into the bank, to keep going!

The non-addicted are precisely the market whose opinions we really need to take note of .... and act on what we learn, as they account for the overwhelming majority of passengers = tickets sold = income = how much there is to spend on keeping it all running.

For my own part, I've always loved rooting around old kit awaiting it's turn in the restoration queue, but then .... I cheerfully admit I'm wierd. I wouldn't want it any other way! :Stig:

Evening all, I’m hoping to make my first visit to the NYMR on Wednesday and/or Thursday and was wondering which locomotive was on the Steam diagram? A look on the NYMR website doesn’t reveal anything (as far as I’m aware?). I am aware the A1 is on the line this week and is working services but I’ve got enough photos of it to sink a battleship and fancy pointing a camera at something different.

    Many thanks,
    James

We did our bit yesterday to enable those hissy big heavy things to come out to play.

Due to the snow we had been unable to complete a short relay but final stone tipping and tamping was completed last night at 21.00.
No rain or snow yesterday until after we had gone home.

Repton has been replaced by the Standard Tank from 1330hrs today. The Tanks smoke box faces North.
