It's probably a question that's been asked many, many times before, but: is there a website with a database of preserved steam in the UK - one that is regularly and reliably updated? Some I've found are very much out-of-date (e.g. showing 78018 as 'undergoing restoration') so if anyone has any pointers, I'd be very grateful.

Have you tried UK Locos (link below)? They are also receptive to updates from informed sources as no one person can keep abreast of all the comings and going of locos etc. Most recent update for your example of 78018 shows it to be working at Great Central Rly. on 21st Jan 18.

Thanks for that - I tried it, but with the search criteria as illustrated below, it returned 'no results' :( I clearly am doing something wrong. Just a list of what is extant would do, e.g. how many 78xxx are preserved.

When you go to UKlocos, use 'search UKLocos' and not the Preserved railway stocklist. Selecting Number in search field 1 and simply putting in 78018 was all that was needed. You sometimes have to use a bit of lateral thinking to get the info you require but it is usually there. For example, putting the location KWVR will bring up a full list of locos on the Woth Valley but putting SVR will bring up half a dozen locos at an irish location. To get the UK SVR you need to put Severn Valley Railway in full.

Okay, so I was doing something wrong! So, how would I go about finding out how many 78000-series locos are in existence? I'll have a go, but...

If you enter '78' as the Number and ensure 'Existing' 'Standard' (gauge), 'Steam' and Stock Type 'None' are checked you will come up with a list of all locos containing the number 78. Then in the Wheels/Type column select 2-6-0 2MT and hey presto! As @Steve said above you may have to fiddle around to get what you want and even then you may still have to scan the list that comes up.
