It's an image stabilizer used in editing , can work wonders on landscape shots, not so much on close up's !

That's one hell of a long smooth pan, that takes a lot of doing despite the electronic aids.

I had a look at his tripod ( can't remember the make ) but the fluid head was unbelievable with such fine smooth movement . He said to me spend as much money as you can afford and get the best tripod and if you have any money left buy a camera .

Some random stuff from on the train that I picked up from various tiers and comments.
Apparently it was the last of the coal (from a colliery that I now can not remember) and we did not know if that was good or bad, but from your comment I guess it was the good stuff.
Shap topped at 19.3 with Tebay passed at 72
Appleby to Ais Gil summit 29 mins 42 secs and a speed of 29.3mph
Did not get any times for the Wilpshire climb as busy trying to get people ready to move forward for Blackburn (two still came rushing down just as the guard showed the green and said is this Blackburn we need to get off here!) and then had a passenger fall over so never did get the details.
Rumour there may have been a trainee fireman with Frank in the morning, but not sure if that was the case or not. It was announced we were looped at Greyrigg due poor steaming.
Seemed more enthusiasts than normal, I think due to recent Galatea performance and some who felt it would be BIL's first run. Almost seemed to be an air of anticipation in the Carnforth U&DGL that I have not noticed before (or maybe just my imagination)

Generally, it pays to switch off the electronic aids when panning because the stability controls tend to fight the intended camera motion and a series of jerks can be the result.

I must admit, I've not seen image stabilisation in an editing program, but then I've only used ones from the cheaper end of the market.

I used to use an image stabiliser during editing, you could set it on 'pan' so that it kept the movement smooth, it had many other different options. Expensive, yes but very effective.

The version I used was not the full price one..

This clip shows two examples of before and after, Scots Guardsman at Whalley Arches on tripod and then 48151 shunting at York, hand held.
These were taken some eight years ago so picture quality not to today's standard.

Some pretty consistent performances over this season of the WCME. It's not often you get the same loco with the same load over the same route with often the same crew. So in the case of Appleby to Ais Gill that time of 29.42 with a min of 29 may be the quickest so far. On 17/02 it was 30.15 at 31 passing MP259¾ although the top of the main climb at MP 260 was 29.46 at 29 that seems very close.

This ability to compare climb after climb is a luxury that I don't think was ever possible in steam days. Without inflating the pride of the RTC and WCRC too much, I have to say that we should be eternally grateful to both for providing such a spectacle and measure of loco performance.
