Went to Pickering last night with support coach. The plan being to take her by road to Severn Valley. They might be able to add to the NR/Northern claim on Bin wagon insurance.....

Quoted elsewhere it hit the bridge at 35mph, and dislodged the bridge 10 inches, wouldn't have minded to see that!!!

Ooh .... premium punters .... nice. Score one for publicity aimed at a mass market! Thems as want chapter and verse can readily seek it out when they get to the line .... :)

So all these cases where a driver hits a bridge with a clearly marked height, the driver must have committed an offence? Does this go on their record, where it can be found?

If insurers can be stopped from covering trucking companies who hire such drivers, they'd be unable to work as drivers thereafter.

Did they have many empty dining places before? I suspect it is difficult to increase capacity.

I daresay a few extra slots may well exist within opening hours ... out of peak season.

Obviously so, and places have filled at a quicker rate since a week past Friday.

Increasing capacity, days of use, is the obvious answer, but with 130 (sure I heard mentioned), days already, maybe not much room for many more???

Or create another dining set (cue massive expense)....

Has to be worth a try I suppose, but I would say NR as it is their asset and Northern because it stopped them running a public service as planned have a claim. The Tornado issue would I would believe be a consequential loss which is probably excluded. So they may need to pursue that through a separate avenue, which of course may not be worth the costs involved.

Evening dinning service perhaps? All depends on what's the business case, if it'd need expanding, or if it's just a temporary boost thanks to the documentary on TV.

The third Met Camm Pullman is being rebuilt at Llangollen and will add a further 33 seats or so if it is added to the Pullman set (there is also talk of it being used for separate services to Whitby, perhaps as an open First) but the LNER CA and NERCG have a couple of vintage diners approaching completion that could be joined with the Gresley "Ryedale Saloon" and a spare Gresley brake to form a second diner with around 90 seats if the desire is there.

More importantly, if Diner bookings are showing an effect then hopefully normal bookings will too in proportion over Easter and beyond. Anyhow, the last programme in the series is tonight!

As I understand it, the option to increase the capacity of a the dining train is limited by the number of seats that a single kitchen car can reasonably cater for. You either need another kitchen car and associated staff to go with it or run more dining trains. The third Met Cam will give a much needed spare to enable other vehicles in the dining rake to be stopped for maintenance.

There are two kitchen cars in the train but only one - Robin - is used for cooking. If the second were to be upgraded (I don't think it meets modern regs) it could be used. The third met camm will only be of any use as a spare for the other parlour car or the non (kitchen)-functional RF. If there's a problem with Robin they are stuffed. It can't replace Car 79 because that's the brake. The NYMR really needs another PFK of some description.

Going back in time, when the catering was done by Scarborough council, it was not unknown for 2 x PFP, 1 x PFK, 1 x RF to be full, along with 1 or 2 x SO and even the BSO sometimes had diners in it, these were the days before car 79 of course.

According to the BARB viewing figures, the second 'Yorkshire Steam Railway was the most watched programme on Channel 5 for w/c 11th March. Obviously a hit with its target audience.

In other news Schools 926 passed its EVL line test runs today and should be available for running to Whitby for the start of the season, joining 1264 and 76079 on that roster. Of non-Whitby locos, 80136 is available and should shortly be joined by 65894 & 63395. 825 and 5428 should also be out during the year, both EVL equipped

EVL stands for Esk Valley Line, i.e. the Whitby-Middlesbrough Network Rail line. Whilst the Moors operate a regular service the 6 miles to and from Grosmont to Whitby, they do on an [very these days] occasional bases run to Battersby too.
